Fifteen students will each receive one-year scholarships and one student will receive a four-year scholarship from the Indiana University South Bend Alumni Scholarship program for 2005. They all will be attending school this fall.

Recipients of the freshman one-year scholarships and their high schools are: Vincent Bauters, Clay High School; Nolan Brubaker, Goshen High School; Jessica Bubp, Plymouth High School; Amanda Groendyke, Mishawaka High School; Stacie Hughes, Northridge High School; Nathan Tipton, Washington High School; Aleah Wilburn, Jimtown High School; and Andrew Young, Clay High School.

The freshman-year scholarships are given to honor students from around the area. In addition to academic achievement, character is considered, and the applicants submit an essay on how they plan to use their education to better their community.

Natalie Replogle, Elkhart Memorial, will receive the Larry E. Lentych Four-Year Scholarship.

The alumni board created the Lentych Scholarship in 2004. That scholarship was named in honor of the founder of the scholarship program and will be awarded each year to the top student who applies.

The nontraditional scholarship recipients are: A. Gwinnilyn Brody, South Bend; Sharon Busenbark, Granger; Timothy Krecsmar, Elkhart; Kristian Lax-Walker, South Bend; Shannon Renfrow, Nappanee; Yolanda Stonewell, Elkhart; and Ann Weedon, Niles.

The nontraditional awards are available to current and entering undergraduate students who have been out of high school for at least three years and enroll in at least six credit hours each semester.

This year, the one-year scholarships were provided by the Andre Corp., Gibson Insurance Group, Gurley Leep Automotive Group, Key Bank, Northwestern Mutual Life Financial Network, Reflex Industries, and Teachers Credit Union, which donated two scholarships.

In addition, IU South Bend Chancellor Una Mae Reck and several members of the community made donations for the nontraditional student scholarships.

The Reflex Industries’ scholarship is given to a student who has demonstrated community service in addition to academic achievement.
