Indiana University South Bend is observing Africa Awareness Week with three events beginning Wednesday, March 16. The opening event is an interfaith candlelight vigil at 7 p.m. in the pedestrian mall near the Student Activities Center.
The vigil will remember the refugees of the Darfur region of Sudan, Africa. Representatives from the Jewish, Christian and Muslim faith communities will lead the prayers.
The vigil is sponsored by the Political Science Club and the American Democracy Project.
The documentary “Invisible Children” will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 17, in the Activities Center lounge. The film, which tells the story of the children of Uganda, is sponsored by the Political Science Club.
The vigil and documentary are free and open to the public.
The third event is the annual Celebration of Africa from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 18, in the Administration Building Cafeteria. The celebration will include music, food, dancing and costumes.
Tickets are available at the door and are $3 for adults and $2 for children. The celebration is sponsored by the Pan African Student Union.
