A. Bruce Burkart will receive the Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna Award for 2005 from the School of Business and Economics of Indiana University South Bend. The award will be presented at the school’s annual Honors Day Luncheon on Sunday, April 3, at the Windsor Park Conference Center.
He was selected for the award because of his leadership and contributions to the advancement of business and to the quality of life in Michiana.
Burkart is senior vice president in charge of the small business division and oversees leasing at 1st Source Bank. He has been with 1st Source for 28 years coming from the Associates Corp.
A South Bend native and a graduate of LaSalle High School, he received his bachelor’s degree in management from IU South Bend in 1972.
He is active in the university and the South Bend community. At IU South Bend, he was member of the Alumni Advisory Board and a supporter of alumni activities. He is past chairman and current member of the IU South Bend Scholarship Committee.
Burkart assisted the alumni legislative committee in obtaining state funding for the Student Activities Center.
In the community he is past president of the Potawatomi Kiwanis Club, past treasurer of the Camp Fire Girls, past president of Catholic Social Services, past board member of United Health Service, past board member of Diabetes Association of St. Joseph County and past business division chairman for the United Way. He also has been active with the LaSalle Boy Scouts fundraising.
In 2000, he received the Ernestine M. Raclin Community Leadership Award from 1st Source. Burkart recently received the Indiana Statewide Certified Development Corporation Volunteer of the Year for his involvement with the Small Business Administration 504 Lending program.
