Wednesday, March 21: The Local Currency Movement in Michiana
11:30 a.m. -12:45 p.m., Quiet Lounge, next to the Administration Building Cafeteria
Did you ever wish you could print your own money? Are you tired of being limited by the formal economy and job market? Do you wish you could trade an hour of your services for an hour-long massage, yard work, or some other service? Learn how you can become involved in the community currency movement as a volunteer, merchant, service-provider, or consumer. Michiana’s Community Currency Initiative Outreach Director, Waldo Carrasco, will explain the local community currency movement and how you can get involved.
Thursday, March 22: Local Currency: A Business Perspective
5:30- 7 p.m., Student Activities Center, Rooms 223-225
Area business leaders and academics discuss the local currency movement and the importance of buying locally in Michiana.
Speakers will include: Jackie Smith, Assoc. Professor of Sociology and Peace Studies, The Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, University of Notre Dame (President, Michiana Community Currency); David Hurley, American Express Financial, Board Member for Downtown South Bend (DTSB); Scott Sernau, Professor of Sociology and Director of International Programs, IU South Bend.
These events are co-sponsored by the American Democracy Project of IU South Bend and the Michiana Community Currency Forum.
Snacks and beverages will be provided free of charge.
