More than 1,000 graduates of the Class of 2004 at Indiana University South Bend were honored at the May 11th commencement. IU South Bend Chancellor Una Mae Reck and Indiana University President Adam Herbert presided over the ceremony in front of 6,000 family and friends of the graduates.

Chancellor Reck used a series of brief profiles about some of the graduates to highlight the dedication and commitment of the students. Herbert gave the charge to the class, offering four principles upon which to base their futures: chart your own course; nurture idealism and avoid cynicism; participate in the civic life of the community; and work hard to make a difference.

A total of 1, 058 degrees were conferred, including 254 masters, 590 bachelors and 214 associate degrees.

Herbert conferred an honorary degree to Jeff Gibney, executive director of the South Bend Heritage Foundation. Chancellor Reck bestowed the 2004 Distinguished Alumni Award on Charles Niemier, senior vice president of international operations of Biomet Orthopedics Inc. of Warsaw.
