Two Indiana University South Bend alumni will be honored for their dedication to the campus and services to others during IU South Bend commencement ceremonies at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 10. The ceremony will be at the Joyce Center, University of Notre Dame.
Andre Anderson, president of Positive Redirections, Nashville, Tenn., and Larry Lentych, chief financial officer of 1st Source Corp., each will receive a Distinguished Alumni Award from the campus.
This is the sixth year for IU South Bend commencement ceremonies at the Joyce Center. Approximately 800 of the 1,074 graduates will participate in the ceremony, according to the Alumni Affairs office.
IU President Adam Herbert and Chancellor Una Mae Reck will lead in the ceremony.
Anderson, chief executive officer and president of Positive Redirections, an agency that helps adults with developmental disabilities lead normal lives. Anderson graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in 1989 and IU South Bend in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
He grew up in a single parent home and flourished at Holy Cross Catholic School and St. Joseph’s. With the help of a teacher, he volunteered at the International Special Olympics in 1987 and discovered the satisfaction of helping those with disabilities.
Anderson attended IU Bloomington and hoped for a career as a rapper. He returned home to raise his younger sister, Erica. He re-entered college at IU South Bend and found his niche when he participated in psychological research projects.
Through his church and youth groups, he became more intrigued by spoken word poetry as a way to deliver messages to young people. On campus he used his talents to form a monthly poetry jam, an evening of open expression that invited the community and students. The jams are now part of the campus tradition.
He is the first African American board-certified behavior analyst in Nashville. He holds master’s degree in clinical behavioral psychology from Fisk University and is pursuing a doctorate from Capella University.
Lentych graduated in 1969 with a bachelor’s in accounting and he has remained involved in the campus in a variety of capacities. He founded the IU South Bend Alumni Scholarship program in 1997 which has raised nearly $500,000 for one-year scholarships that are awarded to honor students.
After college he worked at Price-Waterhouse, where he became a senior accountant. Four years later, he joined 1st Source and he has served as chief financial officer, senior vice president and treasurer.
In 2002, Lentych received the IU Alumni Association President’s Award, for alumni volunteers. At IU South Bend, he has served as present of the Alumni Board, a member of the Advisory Council, the School of Business Advisory Board and the Medical Education Foundation.
