A three-person team from Indiana University South Bend recently placed fifth in the Indiana College Mathematics Contest at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. This was the first time IU South Bend placed in the competition.
The team members were Duc Dang, Hanoi, Vietnam; Danielle Johnson, Mishawaka; and Carlos Esteves, Elkhart. Johnson and Esteves are both seniors and Dang is a junior.
The competition, which is sponsored by the Mathematics Association of American, was started in 1966.
The written competition pitted 36 teams against each other during the one-day event in which team members combine their knowledge of a broad spectrum of college mathematics.
The other winning teams were Purdue, two separate teams from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and IU Bloomington.
