GROUNDBREAKING FOR STUDENT HOUSING
AT IU SOUTH BEND
Indiana University South Bend will have the groundbreaking for student housing at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 12. IU South Bend Chancellor Una Mae Reck, IU President Adam Herbert, city and state leaders will be in attendance.
The event is free and open to the public. Parking is available at the Purdue Technology lot on Northside Boulevard for the event.
The 26.5 acres that will be used for the housing is on the south side of the river, across from the IU South Bend campus. The area was formerly an amusement park and a golf course.
Phase 1 of student housing will include eight two-story apartment buildings featuring one, two and four bedroom units that will house a total of 400 students. A community building will also be built that will contain laundry facilities, computer kiosks, an exercise room, study rooms, mailboxes and a small kitchen.
The property will also include parking, recreational fields, and walking and bicycle trails. Housing is expected to be available for students in the fall of 2008.
The $17.8 million housing project will be linked to the main campus by the pedestrian bridge, which was completed in the fall of 2006.
