Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging Technology to be Offered at IU South Bend
A bachelor's of science degree in medical imaging technology has been approved for Indiana University South Bend. The new degree was approved recently by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education.
Students who would like to start taking pre-BSMIT courses may do so during the second summer session 2008, which begins on June 30. The program is expected to formally institute the first clinical/professional Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging Technology class during the fall semester of 2009. IU South Bend will also continue to offer the Associate of Science degree in Radiography.
The bachelor degree program will enable students to pursue the acquisition of advanced clinical skills beyond the basic entry level skills in radiography associated with the awarding of the Associate of Science degree and successful completion of national certification in radiography.
The bachelor degree is available to students entering the program whose educational goals include a bachelor degree and advanced levels of clinical expertise and certification. It is also available to current practicing registered radiographers who want to further enhance upon their current clinical skills and scope of certification while advancing within the medical imaging profession.
The Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging Technology will consist of didactic and clinical instruction in the medical imaging modalities of computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound (Sonography). The overall curriculum is comprised of general education, didactic medical imaging, and clinical practicum course work. Graduates will not only attain an Indiana University degree upon completion of the program but will also be eligible to test for advanced levels of professional certification.
