IU South Bend’s basketball season opens and it is time for Homecoming week on

campus. Events are scheduled from Nov. 10 through 15.

The week will kick off with a Battle of the Bands at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, in the Student Activities Center. Eight local bands are participating. Three of the bands come from the surround area and they are: Liquid, of Michigan City; Class Act, of LaPorte; (IN) Discipline, of New Buffalo. The five other bands have members from South Bend and Elkhart. Those bands are: A Penny Short, A Thousand Voices, Northern Lights, Midwest Triad and Jynx Mindz.

Each of the bands will play 15 minutes and then it is up to the audience to vote.

Comedian Tim Young will entertain at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, in room 1001, Wiekamp Hall. His brand of humor has been popular on the college circuit. He has performed at more than 200 colleges. Young was nominated for Comedian of the Year twice and he has appeared on MTV and Comedy Central.

The women’s basketball team will meet Goshen College at home at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13.

The 1986 film “Hoosiers” will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, in room 1001, Wiekamp Hall. The movie starring Gene Hackman and Dennis Hopper is the story of Hickory High and basketball greatness.

Homecoming week concludes with a Tron laser tag game from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, in activities center parking lot, a tailgate party with free food from 6 to 8 p.m. and the men’s basketball game at 8 p.m., when the team meet Andrews University. During halftime, the campus champs from a three-on-three tournament will play the alumni basketball players.

All events are free and open to the public.

This is the second year for a fall homecoming weekend at IU South Bend. Jeff Walker, director of student activities and athletics, said he hopes that the campus builds on the successes of last year’s events to bring alumni, students and staff together for the week of festivities.
