Speaker to Address Health Care and Domestic Violence

Sociologist Patricia M. Ulbrich will be the guest speaker at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, in Room 1001, Wiekamp Hall, Indiana University South Bend.

Ulbrich, who was winner of the 2002 Sociologists for Women in Society Feminist Activism Award, will speak on “The Health Care Response to Domestic Violence: Policy and Prevention.”

A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Ulbrich earned her doctorate at the University of Illinois and was awarded a National Institute of Health post-doctoral fellowship in social psychology from Indiana University.

Her research has focused on worked on family issues among couples, women’s health and domestic violence. She taught at the University of Miami, University of Akron and Chathan College, Pittsburgh.

She has served in an advisory capacity to both the Centers for Disease Control and the Office of Population Affairs regarding research and policy agendas on domestic violence and reproductive health.

Ulbrich retired from Family Health Council, Inc., of western Pennsylvania, where she designed and evaluated a project to make family planning clinics an empowerment zone for rural battered women. She is currently president of the founding board of the Women and Girls Foundation of Southwest Pennsylvania.
