The history of the Israel and Palestine conflict and how to achieve peace will be explored during a three-hour discussion and forum on Dec. 4 in Room 1001, Wiekamp Hall, Indiana University South Bend.

The event will open at noon with Bob Feferman presenting Israel’s perspective. The next speaker at 1 p.m. will be Khalil Azar discussing Palestine’s point of view. A conflict resolution forum will conclude the event from 2 to 3 p.m. The audience and speakers are invited to discuss the different perspectives.

J. Paul Herr, a professor in the Political Science Department and the School of Public and

Environmental Affairs, will be the moderator.

Feferman was born and raised in South Bend and graduated from IU Bloomington with a degree in political science. After graduation, he lived in Israel for 10 years, where he served in the Israel Defense Forces.

He now lives in Mishawaka and teaches junior high history and the history of Israel to children and adults at Temple Beth-El, South Bend.

Azar has a bachelor’s degree in political science from IU South Bend. He is currently working on his master’s in liberal studies at IU South Bend. He has lived in the area for the last 25 years and is an Arab-American of Palestinian descent.

Joining Herr, Feferman and Azar in the forum will be Michael Gitzin, Israeli emissary to the Jewish community of Michiana. He was formerly an intelligence officer in the Israel Defense Forces and has participated in a number of Palestinian/Israeli dialogue groups.

The event, which is sponsored by the IU South Bend Political Science Club, is free and open to the public.
