Tim Roemer to Speak on 9/11 Commission
and to Receive Chancellor’s Medal
Former 3rd District Rep. Tim Roemer will speak on his perspectives on the 9/11 Commission at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, in Room 158, Northside Hall, Indiana University South Bend.
Roemer will meet the public before the address from 6:30 to 7 p.m. in the foyer outside Room 158. Both the welcome and the talk are free and open to the public.
Roemer is a member of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States and was recently named president of the Center for National Policy, a nonpartisan public policy organization based in Washington, D.C.
The 9/11 Commission will make its final report to the public in May 2004.
Prior to the talk, the former representative will be on campus to receive the Chancellor’s Medal for Service during a reception at 4:30 to 6:15 p.m. Oct. 27, in the Associates Building, Ruskin Street.
He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, San Diego, a master’s and doctorate from the University of Notre Dame. He taught at American University in Washington, D.C. and served on the staffs of Rep. John Brademas from 1978-79 and Senator Dennis DeConcini of Arizona from 1985-89.
Roemer first won his seat in Indiana’s 3rd District in 1989 and served for 12 years. While in Congress he served on the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the Committee on Education and the Workforce, and the Committee on Science. He played a key role in a number of education bills and was recognized for his successful leadership of bipartisan legislation which balanced the budget, developed welfare reform, improved the affordability of higher education and reformed elementary and secondary education.
Created in 1997, the Chancellor’s Medal honors individuals or organizations for exemplary service to the community. Previous winners include the IU South Bend Alumni Association (1997), Rep. B. Patrick Bauer (1998), University of Notre Dame President Emeritus the Rev. Theodore Hesburgh (1999), Mary Lou and Judd Leighton (2000), the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County (2001) and Cheryl Little in 2003.
Roemer is the 2002 recipient but scheduling problems delayed the ceremony.
Speaking of the award, Roemer said, “This is a high honor to be recognized for helping the community. It makes it even more rewarding to be recognized by one of the leading institution in Indiana.”
