Fred Dodd, assistant managing editor/production for the South Bend Tribune, will share his experiences as a correspondent in Iraq and discuss his opinions on the book “War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct.19, in the fifth floor atrium of the Franklin D. Schurz Library at Indiana University South Bend.
This event is part of One Book, One Campus and the Schurz Library’s Speaker Series. It is free and open to the public.
Dodd spent 2 1/2 months last year as an embedded reporter with South Bend's Marine Corps Reserve unit in Kuwait and Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He wrote daily columns, took photographs, shot video for WSBT-TV and called in radio reports for WSBT-AM and FM.
When he returned, the Tribune published a book of his photographs and columns titled “Hometown Heroes.” The Northern Indiana Center for History displayed more than 40 of his photographs for several months earlier this year.
This spring he returned to Kuwait and Iraq, spending a month with a pair of South Bend Army Reserve units. He grew up on South Bend's west side and is a graduate of IU South Bend.
A book signing and reception will follow Dodd’s presentation. Copies of “Hometown Heroes” will be available for $29.95 each and may be purchased with check or cash.
The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Franklin D. Schurz Library.
