HISTORY OF PROJECT
1989 - Campus master plan calls for pedestrian bridge and land purchase.
1994 - Playland golf course (25.6 acres) purchased from city of South Bend for $680,000 by Indiana University.
1999- U.S. House approves projects to stabilize river along with planned construction of pedestrian bridge.
2000 - Army Corps of Engineers approved to oversee construction. The pedestrian bridge is in the design phase with estimated cost of $7 million.
2001 – Pedestrian bridge redesigned with an estimated cost of approximately $2 million.
2003 – Pedestrian bridge project approved by Army Corps of Engineers
2004 - Indiana University approves the project cooperative agreement
2005 - Army Corps awards construction contract
PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE STATISTICS
Construction firms:
Bayshore Contractors, LLC, of Ludington, Mich.,
Northern Indiana Construction Co., of Mishawaka.
Steadfast Bridges, Fort Payne, Ala.
Length - 600 feet
Width - 10 feet
Side railings – 4 feet high metal braces
Pedestrian bridge will be approximately 25 feet above St. Joseph River
Approximately 15 feet above Northside Boulevard
Made of steel construction with a concrete deck.
Anchored by two concrete pilings in the river
Pedestrian bridge will feature red with white panels
“Indiana University South Bend” in red light emitting side panels.
Security phones and lighting installed for safety.
Bridge will be patrolled by campus police.
Maintenance, snow and ice removal handled by IU South Bend facilities management.
900 lineal feet of riverbank stabilized on both sides of bridge with erosion protection.
Approximate time to completion – one year.
