Judy Norsigian, co-author of “Our Bodies, Ourselves” will be the guest speaker for the Gloria Kaufman Memorial Lecture, at Indiana University South Bend. She will speak on the impact of the media on women’s health at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, in Room 221, Student Activities Center. A reception and a book signing will follow.

The talk is free and open to the public. The book will be on sale one hour prior to the speech outside Room 221, of the Student Activities Center. The book is currently for sale in the campus bookstore.

The event is sponsored by Catherine Romano-Orth, Memorial Hospital Spirit of Women, the Gloria Kaufman Fund, IU South Bend Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts, Saint Mary’s College Women’s Studies, University of Notre Dame Gender Studies and American Association of University Women.

Additional sponsorship was presented by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Office of Public Affairs and University Advancement, School of Nursing and Health Professions, School of Education, Office of Academic Affairs, all from IU South Bend.

Norsigian’s trip to the area will include speaking with students on all three campuses.

In addition to being the co-author of the book, she is co-director the Boston Women’s Book Collective (BWHBC) and the founder and board member of Community Works, which raises funds for social change organizations.

The BWHBC is a nonprofit, public interest women’s health education, advocacy, and consulting organization. The goal has been to produce a book that makes accurate health and medical information accessible to a broad audience by weaving women’s stories into a framework of practical, clearly written text.

The eighth edition of “Our Bodies, Ourselves: A New Edition for A New Era" was published this past spring. Beginning in 1970 with the publication of the first edition of Our Bodies, Ourselves it has been a force for more than 35 years. Some authorities say that OBOS inspired the women’s health movement.

Norsigian has received numerous awards for her work including the Public Service Award from the Massachusetts Public Health Association, a honorary degree from Worcester State College and an alumnae association award from Radcliffe College. She was named by Women’s E-News as one of the 21 Leaders for the 21st Century.
