Indiana University South Bend will focus on civic engagement and democracy this year with a series of lectures, discussions, radio commentaries on WVPE 88.1 FM, candidate visits, voter registration opportunities and a website dedicated to debate and daily events. The venture into civic duty is the American Democracy Project (ADP). IU South Bend and 190 other college campuses are taking part.

The IU South Bend version of the ADP is linked to another campus-wide project, “One Book, One Campus.” The topic for the year will be media and democracy. It is sponsored by the Franklin D. Schurz Library and ADP.

One Book, One Campus encourages students, faculty and staff to read the same book and participate in discussions centered on “War is a Force That Give Us Meaning” by Chris Hedges. Hedges presents a news correspondent’s view of war.

Hedges was a foreign correspondent for 15 years covering El Salvador, Kosovo and the Persian Gulf. He worked at the Dallas Morning News, the Christian Science Monitor and National Public Radio. He joined the staff of the New York Times in 1990 and was a member of the Times staff to win a Pulitzer Prize in 2002 for coverage of global terrorism.

As part of ADP, the National Public Radio affiliate WVPE 88.1 FM and IU South Bend have teamed up with IU South Bend for a series of commentaries on the election and civic duty. The series opened on Sept. 7 with a discussion between Professor Elizabeth Bennion, campus director of ADP, and Beth Graham, WVPE news director.

The series will continue at 7:30 a.m., 12:30 and 4:30 p.m. each Tuesday through the election. Graham said she hopes that the commentaries will include pieces from students and community members as well as faculty.

The first campus event in the series will be a lunch time discussion at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, in IU South Bend’s cafeteria. It will focus on the ways that students, faculty and staff can be involved in the yearlong ADP and One Book, One Campus programs.

Other lunch discussions include: Military Duty as Civic Duty – Perspectives of Student Veterans, Tuesday, Sept.28; Veterans’ Perspectives on Military Service and War as a Force, Wednesday, Oct. 6; Moving From Tragedy to Dialogue and Social Action – A Conversation with Beth Loffreda (author of “Losing Matt Shepard”), Monday, Oct. 11; Informed Voting as a Civic Duty – Candidates and Issues of the 2004 Election, Wednesday, Oct. 20; Angry, Bored, Confused: Why Don’t Students Participate in Politics, Tuesday, Nov. 2; Global Citizenship – Looking Beyond Our Borders, Wednesday, Nov. 17; Making Our Alma Mater Proud – IUSB Alumni Making a Difference, Tuesday, Nov. 30.

One Book/One Campus has invited Fred Dodd, assistant managing editor/production of the South Bend Tribune, to speak at 7 p.m. Oct. 19, at the Schurz Library fifth floor atrium. Dodd was an embedded reporter in Iraq at the beginning of the war with the 766th Transportation Battalion and the 428th Military Police Company. Dodd will share his opinions on Hedges’ book. Other events will be scheduled later in the semester and next spring.

The campus events are free and open to the public.
