The Civil Rights Heritage Center of Indiana University South Bend will sponsor a fund-raising walk at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16. “Walk the Path of Peace and Freedom” will be a time to reflect on the power of community commitment.
The walk will begin at the Aretz Pavilion, which is in front of Northside Hall along the St. Joseph River. Walkers will have a choice of a 1-mile or a 4.2-mile course on the East Race Riverwalk. The walk will begin and end at IU South Bend.
The walk will raise money for the heritage center as well as four other civil rights organizations. Those organizations, which were stops on the Freedom Summer tour for IU South Bend students, are: The Fannie Lou Hamer Memorial and the Sunflower County Freedom Project, both of Sunflower, Miss.; the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, Birmingham, Ala; and the National Voting Rights Museum, Selma, Ala.
The IU South Bend center teaches citizens and youth about the importance of the civil rights movement, active citizenship, individual and collective actions.
All walkers and teams that register before Oct. 10 will receive a T-shirt. After Oct. 10, it will be on a first-come and first-served basis.
The pre-registration fee is $20, day-of registration fee is $25, family rate of five people is $80 or sponsor a team for a minimum of $80.
