The 2004 fall semester at Indiana University South Bend has been a record-setter. IU South Bend set a new record for total credit hours taken and has the honor of having the largest percentage increase in both enrollment and credit hours of all Indiana University campuses.
According to figures released by Indiana University, enrollment at IU South Bend increased by 221 students for a total of 7,501, a 3 percent increase from last year. In credit hours taken, IU South Bend increased by 2,798 for a new record of 70,519, up 4.1 percent from last year. Credit hours are critically important because they serve as the basis for operational funding from the state legislature.
“We work very hard at telling the story of quality education, affordability and personal attention at IU South Bend and it appears the message is getting through,” said Chancellor Una Mae Reck.
Overall, IU campuses reported a decrease in enrollment of 0.6 percent and a decrease in credit hours of 0.4 percent. Of the eight campuses, only IU South Bend, IUPUI and IU Northwest had increases, with IU South Bend having the largest gains.
“We are changing the culture to where enrollment management is everyone’s responsibility at IU South Bend from switchboard operators to groundskeepers to professors to deans, all the way to the chancellor,” Reck said. “I can’t speak to why other IU campuses are down in enrollment, I just know that IU South Bend is growing and the future is bright.” Reck added that IU South Bend is hiring a vice chancellor for student affairs and enrollment management and that a three-year master enrollment management plan is being drafted.
While IU South Bend showed the largest increase in both students and credit hours, the Bloomington campus showed the largest decrease. IU Bloomington has enrollment of 37,821, down 768 students from last year and a 2.7 percent drop in credit hours.
