Noted author and nonviolence advocate Arun Gandhi will make three appearances to speak on peace and nonviolence on Wednesday, Sept. 29, in South Bend and Elkhart.
Gandhi is the grandson of India’s nonviolence philosopher Mohandas K. “Mahatma” Gandhi. Under his grandfather’s tutelage, he learned firsthand the effects of a national campaign of nonviolence in India.
Arun and his wife founded the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence in 1991 at Christian Brothers University, Memphis, Tenn.
Gandhi will be speaking at a lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Associate Building, Ruskin Street. The topic will be “Community and Peace.”

A reception and book signing will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Midwest Museum of American Art, 429 S. Main St., Elkhart.
The Gandhi visit will conclude with a Celebration of the Arts and Nonviolence from 7 to 9 p.m. at the ELCO Performing Arts Center, 410 S. Main St., Elkhart. The ELCO event will include numerous groups from the community coming together in peace and shared understanding. The evening will include children’s art, African drumming, an adult community choir, a children’s community choir, Just Drumming Around with students from Hawthorne and Roosevelt schools, a reading by Mark Potuck, Shades of Blue Singers from Elkhart Community Schools and a performance from the Elkhart Civic Theatre actors.
Gandhi will speak at 8 p.m.
