Richard J. Jensen will be presented the Lewis S. Armstrong Award on Thursday, Sept. 30, at a banquet in his honor at the Christiana Creek Country Club.
Each year the Indiana University South Bend School of Business and Economics presents this award for distinguished achievement, leadership and contributions to the advancement of business and quality of life in Michiana.
Jensen has a long career as a business and community leader. He is a retired vice president of Elkhart General Hospital. Prior to joining the hospital, he worked at First Bank and Trust Co., (now 1st Source Bank) and Tower Federal Savings and Loan Association. At Tower, he was executive vice president.
He served as a member of the board of trustees of the Elkhart Community School Corp., from 1972 to 1992 and as board president from 1975 to 1984.
He has been active with the Elkhart Rotary Club, Elkhart Elks Lodge 425, Elkhart Community Bank, Building Corporation of the Elkhart Community School Corp., Better Business Bureau of Northeastern Indiana, Real Services, First Congregational Church of Elkhart, and the Elkhart General Hospital Foundation.
Over the years he was involved with the Elkhart Credit Bureau, Elkhart Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, United Way of Elkhart County, Inc., Salvation Army, Neighborhood Housing Services of South Bend, Junior Achievement, Ivy Tech State College, Boy Scouts of America, ADEC, Vocation Building Trades Association and the CTS Foundation.
He has received numerous awards for his work including the Art Decio Volunteer of the Year Award, Distinguished Friend of ADEC, Citizen of the Year from the Elkhart Lions and the Mary Briggs Award from the Elkhart County UAW.
