Fifteen students will each receive one-year scholarships and one student will receive a four-year scholarship from the Indiana University South Bend Alumni Scholarship this fall.

Recipients of the freshman one-year scholarships and their high schools are: Luke Beyler, John Glenn High School; Matisse Giddings, St. Joseph High School; Jillian Guzicki, Washington High School; Janelle McMillen, Plymouth High School; Andrew Pola, Clay High School; Daniel Schnaars, Concord High School; Mary Kathleen Smith, Clay High School; Travis Talboom, Washington High School; Melissa Turk, Washington High School; Brittany Yoder, Northridge High School; and Angela Zarembka, St. Joseph High School.

The nontraditional scholarship recipients are: Abigail Buell and Jennifer Driggs, both of South Bend; Lisa Fritchley, of Millersburg; and Michelle Wyant, of Nappanee. The nontraditional awards are available to current and entering undergraduate students who have been out of high school for at least three years and enroll in at least six credit hours each semester.

John Glenn graduate Christopher Horvath will receive the Larry E. Lentych Four-Year Scholarship.

The alumni board created the Lentych Scholarship for this fall. That scholarship was named in honor of the founder of the scholarship program and will be awarded each year to the top student who applies.

The program provides freshman-year scholarships to honors students from around the area. In addition to academic achievement, character is considered, and the applicants submit an essay on how they plan to use their education to better their community.

This year, full scholarships were provided by the Andre Corp., Gibson Insurance Group, Gurley Leep Automotive Group, Koontz-Wagner Electric Company, NIPSCO, Northwestern Mutual Life Financial Network, Reflex Industries, and Teachers Credit Union, which donated two scholarships.

In addition, IU South Bend Chancellor Una Mae Reck awards four $1,000 scholarships through the program for nontraditional students.

The Reflex Industries’ scholarship goes to a student who has demonstrated community service in addition to academic achievement.
