Jerry Pattengale, nationally known speaker on student success and the "sophomore slump," will speak at Indiana University South Bend beginning at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, September 27, in the Student Activities Center, Room 225.

To kick-off the IU South Bend Career Services Office's Speaker Series for the academic year, Pattengale will be speaking on issues such as retention in higher education, motivating college students towards success, the first-year experience and the “sophomore slump” when students do not do as well as their first year. Students, staff, faculty and administrators from all area colleges and universities as well as community members are invited to attend.

Pattengale speaks nationally and contributes regularly to the scholarship on millennials and student success. He has spoken at a wide variety of campuses from Texas A and M to Ivy Tech.

He has written for a number of publications from a popular newsprint series and the "Accidental Author" blog for Paxton Media to research-based texts and articles, such as "Visible Solutions for Invisible Students." (University of South Carolina Press, 2000), "The Motivated Student: The Dream Needs To Be Stronger than the Struggle" (McGraw-Hill, in press), "Helping Sophomores

Succeed" (co-authored with John Gardner, Stuart Hunter et al, in press, Jossey-Bass).
