Dr. Richard I. Evans (pictured to the left), Distinguished University Professor of Psychology, Director of the Social Psychology/Behavioral Medicine Research Group, and Director of the Social Psychology Program at the University of Houston was a visitor to our campus in early April. Dr. Evans came to our campus as a Visiting Scholar of the Indiana University Institute for Advanced Studies. While on campus, Professor Evans spoke to Dr. Gottwald's P459: History and Systems classes on two occasions. In addition to his personal insights and observations about historical figures and theoretical systems in psychology, Dr. Evans showed interviews he had made with noted psychologists B.F. Skinner and Erich Fromm. These films are part of an outstanding and invaluable series of such taped interviews Dr. Evans conducted with a large number of eminent psychologists. In addition to these class presentations, Dr. Evans presented a public lecture that reflected on his research on prevention, specifically addressing "Preventing Substance Abuse in Children and Adolescents: What Do We Really Know?" |

We wish him the best in his new appointment and look forward to the accomplishments that will surely follow him there. Dr. Paul Schnur, Chair of the Department of Psychology for the past 7 years, will step down from his position and take a position as a Health Scientist Administrator with the National Institute of Health's National Institute on Drug Abuse in Maryland. We extend our heartfelt appreciation for the outstanding efforts of Dr. Schnur as our department chairperson. His inclusive and intelligent leadership will be fondly remembered and missed. We wish him the best in his new position. Good luck, Tim and Paul! Stay in touch! Retirement: Dr. Elizabeth Scarborough, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will retire at the end of the current academic year. Dr. Scarborough has served admirably as the Dean of our College for the past 9 years. She is a well-respected historian of psychology, particularly of the history of women in psychology.
