New 5-year Plan Posted!

A PDF file of our newly revised 5-year plan of scheduled classes in the Department of Psychology at IUSB is posted. A number of personnel and curricular changes have occurred since the last version of this document was posted and therefore it needed to be revised to reflect planned offerings. The new, revised file of the 5-year plan was posted during the Spring 2006 semester.

In addition to our complete 5-year plan of classes, a schedule of classes to be offered in Elkhart has also been developed and posted. This PDF file may be found at the link or through the Department of Psychology homepage links.

Grants Received

Psychology faculty have recently received grants to support their research efforts.

  • Dr. Dennis Rodriguez received an IU Seed Grant for $3000 as part of a special program to support efforts to seek external funding. The title of the grant was "Child and Adult Behaviors" and it will support preliminary research that helps to distinguish the two subtypes of Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) as a prelude to a larger, hopefully externally funded study that would measure task-related brain activity in those who exhibit the variant forms of ADHD.
  • Dr. Michelle Verges also received an IU Seed Grant for $2750 as part of the special fund program. In addition, Michelle received a Faculty Research Grant for $8000 to permit her to devote the summer of 2006 to her research. The title of the latter grant was "The Role of Expert Knowledge in Artifactual Categorization."
  • Dr. Kevin Ladd also received an IU Seed Grant for $3000 as part of the special fund program. These funds will support Dr. Ladd's ongoing studies of prayer and religion.

Congratulations, Dennis, Michelle, and Kevin!

5K Walk - Community Service and Fun

On April 23rd Dr. Michelle Verges and several of her P354 Psychological Statistics students participated in the 5K Homeward Bound Walk held in South Bend. More than 250 participants took part in the event, starting at the College Football Hall of Fame and moving through the downtown area.

As can be seen in the picture, Dr. Verges and the students participated in the event, complete with their individual team t-shirts. The logo on their shirts was "Life is a Normal Distribution: Get Transformed!" Congratulations to Dr. Verges and these students for their civic service and the fun they had doing it!

ADVISING

All majors, minors, and associate degree students should be aware that the IUSB Psychology Department requires that all students be advised at least once each year by a faculty advisor. This advising session serves several important functions. Of course, it allows you to get advice about courses for the next and upcoming semesters. It also ensures that your advisor can attempt to monitor your movement toward your degree, both in psychology and with respect to other degree requirements. This will help to identify problem areas or omissions early so that you can address them and graduate without delay. Finally, advising can also provide you with imporant information and input regarding your career planning, résumé writing, and other developmental issues crucial to your life success. As you can see, advising is much more than just course selection. Please be advised regularly.

ALUMNI, ATTENTION!

We would love to include information about our alumni as part of this scrapbook. If you are an IUSB Psychology Alumnus and would forward information about yourself, education, career, accomplishments, etc., we would be happy to post it here with your permission. Include a photograph and we will try to include it also. Please indicate your year of IUSB graduation.

If you have accomplishments or other events you would like to see included here, please forward them to the department or to Dr. McIntosh.
