Rebecca
Ruvalcaba,
an IU South Bend alum and psychology graduate (2005) was
recently announced as Executive Director of La Casa de
Amistad in South Bend (746 S. Meade Street). As noted in a
February 6, 2007 story in the South Bend Tribune
(click
here), Rebecca has
worked in several social service positions previously in the
local area.
As described at
michianalistings.com (information guide to Michiana), "La
Casa de Amistad operates a youth and adult center on the
west side of South Bend. La Casa addresses the needs of
South Bend area Hispanics through organized activities and
support. Youth participate in a range of activities to help
develop leadership skills and achieve an understanding of
their own culture and heritage as it relates to the general
population." In addition to youth-focused activities, La
Casa also runs a food pantry, classes in English and Spanish
for adults and programs such as assistance for domestic
violence victims.
Congratulations,
Rebecca!

Psychology Club RECORD Fundraiser
for Camp Millhouse
When you went through the Psychology area of Wiekamp, did
you notice those cute, colorful "I Care" bears all over the
wall? Those bears represent the donations of students,
faculty, staff and others to Camp Millhouse (a campground
for special needs individuals, located in Green Township of
St. Joseph County) collected by members of IU South Bend's
Psychology Club. Raising money for Camp Millhouse is
consistent with a Psychology Club mission to provide
community service. The funds raised will permit individuals
who might not otherwise be able to attend Camp Millhouse to
attend. IU South Bend's Psychology Club has been conducting
the "I Care" Bear drive each year since 2004. With donations
of $1 or more, individuals write their name on an "I Care"
Bear and they are posted in the halls of the Psychology
Department. Back in 2004 the club raised a total of $412 for
Camp Millhouse. In subsequent years it raised $150 (2005)
and $160 (2006). This year was the by far
the highest total ever, at $1,050!
The Psychology Club would like to thank those who
contributed to this important community service. Thanks also
to Laura Talcott,
faculty sponsor of Psychology Club for her leadership.

with some BagFest "contributions"
|
Dr.
Catherine
Borshuk
was a guest expert on
intergroup conflict on Thursday, January 25 on the inaugural
edition of WNIT's (local public television station) program
Michiana Voices. The one-hour call-in show on topical
current events focused specifically on the Iraq war. The
other guests on the program were from Notre Dame (a
classical scholar on Islam, and an individual from the Kroc
center).
Dr.
Michelle
Verges
was the developer of a
highly successful BagFest event on Saturday, April 14 that
was covered by both print (South
Bend Tribune)
and TV media and received attention in the Spring issue of
the IUSB Alumni publication Foundations
as well. The event collected 72,440 plastic bags to
be recycled and helped raise awareness of recycling as well
as environmental issues. The bags collected in BagFest were
transported to Wal-Mart to be recycled. The event was
organized by Dr. Verges as part of a class project in her
psychological statistics class. A class blog about the event
may be found at http://www.conserveplasticbags.blogspot.com/.

a client.

Spring Break
Adventure and Education
|
Dr.
Kevin
Ladd and
two of his Spring 2007 History and Systems
students, Kathy
Miller and
Lisa
Silveus,
took a "road trip" to the Archives
of the History of American
Psychology
in Akron, Ohio (at the University of Akron) during
the Spring Break. In addition to a manuscript
collection that includes papers by over 700
psychologists, there are numerous apparatus pieces
and instruments used in psychological research as
well as photographs and films. The trip allowed
students to access and utilize the information in
the archives for preparing their papers (a paper is
required in P459) as well as the opportunity to
peruse, peek at, and ponder the many items on
display.
Take a look at the
pictures
and account of the
trip and
some of its highlights.

ADVISING
All majors, minors, and associate
degree students should be aware that the IUSB Psychology
Department requires that all students be advised at least
once each year by a faculty advisor. This advising session
serves several important functions. Of course, it allows you
to get advice about courses for the next and upcoming
semesters. It also ensures that your advisor can attempt to
monitor your movement toward your degree, both in psychology
and with respect to other degree requirements. This will
help to identify problem areas or omissions early so that
you can address them and graduate without delay. Finally,
advising can also provide you with imporant information and
input regarding your career planning, résumé
writing, and other developmental issues crucial to your life
success. As you can see, advising is much more than just
course selection. Please be advised regularly.

|

to include it also. Please indicate your year of IUSB
graduation.
If you have
