Fall Semester 2007 (July - December)

HEADLINE ALERT: New Faculty Members (see below)

Retirement Update

Dr. Tom Mawhinney, who retired in August of 2006, is enjoying his retirement along with his wonderful wife, Sally. They just completed a month-long sailing adventure to Mackinaw City (see the picture at the right). One of Tom's greatest passions has always been sailing. He and Sally now have the time to be on their boat and enjoy the water.

Visitors from Ayiti (Haiti) - SOCACT Events

Dr. Dé Bryant's Social Action Project recently hosted (along with the Charles Martin Youth Center, IUSB's Psychology Department, IUSB's Office of Campus Climate, St. Mary's Center for Women's Intercultural Leadership, and Kim Love Productions of St. Louis, MO) a group of visitors to campus from Haiti. The group, N a Sonje (which is Kreyol for "we shall remember") was here for a week in October. The group comes from a small mountain community outside Port-au-Prince in Ayiti (what Westerners call "Haiti"). While in South Bend, the group took part in many events, including as noted below, a roundtable discussion on October 23rd and a play performed on October 25th at the Charles Martin Youth Center. The play was covered by the South Bend Tribune in a November 8 story (the photograph accompanying the description of the play below is from that story and courtesy of the South Bend Tribune; the young woman on the right is Isis Gladney from our local community taking part in the interactive play; on the left is Carla Bluntschli from the Haitian group). In addition to the roundtable and play, they also met with groups and individuals dedicated to building llinks across race and religion to strengthen our communities. More specifically, they made guest lectures in psychology, sociology, and women's studies courses; were interviewed by the South Bend Tribune and were guests on WSBT-AM 960 talk radio (the show Providing Options hosted by Brother Sage) and taped interviews for IUSB's Continuing Education class on the historical roots of racism as well as the American Democracy Project. More information for the N a Sonje Foundation, the play "Three Innocents and a Spirit," and Memory Village can be found online.

Jeri Wiegand (1999 IUSB Psychology Grad) received her M.A. in Psychology with an emphasis in Clinical Psychology from the Fielding Graduate University in January of 2007. Jeri is presently working in Texas and preparing to begin her doctoral dissertation on suicide attempts and domestic abuse victims. She expects to complete her internship and all degree requirements as well by 2009. Dr. John McIntosh will be an external examiner for her dissertation. Congratulations, Jeri, on your master's degree and best wishes for your continued study.

Holiday Luncheon

The Psychology Department's annual holiday potluck luncheon was held on Monday, December 17th. The food was delicious as always. A gift exchange of non-purchased items was a highlight of the event, with several quite unique items exchanged. Our appreciation is extended to Monica Markley for the decorating she did and to Kathy Ritchie for her organization of the event. A special guest was Kathy's mother. Pictures are posted here.

IU Undergraduate Research Conference

Three IUSB Psychology students took part in the 13th annual Indiana University Undergraduate Research Conference on Friday, November 30 at IU Southeast. This year's conference theme was "Making Research Relevant." Dr. Dennis Rodriguez accompanied the students to the conference. The students who presented were: Brice Petgen, Jeff Brooks, and Elizabeth (Lisa) Silveus. Both Brice and Jeff were mentored by Dr. Dennis Rodriguez and Lisa was mentored by Dr. Carolyn Schult. The full titles of the students projects were:

  • Petgen, Brice. The Pop Music Effect: Does Popular Music Increase Scores on Spatial Relations Tasks?
  • Brooks, Jeff. The Social Function of Disgust: A Correlational Study of Disgust Sensitivity, Social Desirability and Conformity.
  • Silveus, Elizabeth M. Stressors and Their Effects at Particular Times of Emerging Adulthood.

Dr. Kevin Ladd's P211 class also had a poster session the week of December 10th. Pictures of the students and their posters may be found here.

ADVISING

All majors, minors, and associate degree students should be aware that the IUSB Psychology Department requires that all students be advised at least once each year by a faculty advisor. This advising session serves several important functions. Of course, it allows you to get advice about courses for the next and upcoming semesters. It also ensures that your advisor can attempt to monitor your movement toward your degree, both in psychology and with respect to other degree requirements. This will help to identify problem areas or omissions early so that you can address them and graduate without delay. Finally, advising can also provide you with imporant information and input regarding your career planning, résumé writing, and other developmental issues crucial to your life success. As you can see, advising is much more than just course selection. Please be advised regularly.

ALUMNI, ATTENTION!

We would love to include information about our alumni as part of this scrapbook. If you are an IUSB Psychology Alumnus and would forward information about yourself, education, career, accomplishments, etc., we would be happy to post it here with your permission. Include a photograph and we will try to include it also. Please indicate your year of IUSB graduation.

If you have accomplishments or other events you would like to see included here, please forward them to the department or to Dr. McIntosh.
