WAY TO GO!!!

Presentations:

Dr. De Bryant took part in the IUSB Table Talk, a series of lunchtime discussions on current topics, on Thursday, September 14th. The session was on "The Role of Community Service in Student Learning" and was held in the IUSB cafteria. The series is sponsored by the Offices of Student Persistence and Alumni Affairs. Dr. Bryant was one of four facilitators of the discussion session.

Dr. Kathy Ritchie recently presented a paper on the results of a study she and one of our Master of Applied Psychology graduate students, Robin Warrell, have been conducting with the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office. The project studied suicide attempt behaviors among battered women and variables associated with that behavior. The conference was held in San Diego, CA on September 25-26.

Dr. Kathy Ritchie took part in another IUSB Table Talk, a series of lunchtime discussions on current topics, on Monday, November 27th. The session was on "Parenting in a Complex Society" and was held in the IUSB cafteria. The series is sponsored by the Offices of Student Persistence and Alumni Affairs. Dr. Ritchie was one of four facilitators of the discussion session.

McIntosh Makes Research Award Presentation

On Thursday evening, November 9, at 7:00 pm, Dr. John McIntosh gave a public lecture in Wiekamp Hall, room DW1001. This lecture was given as the recipient of the 2nd annual IUSB Distinguished Research Award. The Distinguished Research Award is given to a faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in academic research. The address was entitled "The Legacy of Suicide: A Research Perspective on Survivors of Suicide." The lecture highlighted research findings on the impact on family members and other significant others who have lost a loved one to suicide. Dr. McIntosh discussed ongoing and recent research in which he is involved that include therapists who have lost a client to suicide as well as a groundbreaking program that provides immediate contact with survivors following the suicide death of their loved one. Problems with and directions for future research in this neglected area were also noted. A videotape of the lecture is on reserve in the Schurz Library.

John L. McIntosh, Ph.D.

IUSB Fest

Drs. Julie Hernandez and Catherine Borshuk attended our Psychology table at the 3rd annual IUSB Fest on Saturday, September 25. Although the weather could have been a bit more cooperative, there were many visitors who discovered our department as well as those who tried their skill at a mirror tracing task.

Construction

If you have been on campus recently, you had to notice the hole in the ground next to Wiekamp Hall. That hole is rapidly filling up with a building that will become the Student Activities Center. The SAC is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2001. Below is an artist's rendition of the front of the building.

IMPORTANT NOTICE!!! and Special Newsletter Edition Available

Personnel changes and leaves have necessitated a change in order for the advanced labs to be offered in the semesters beginning with Fall 2001. P429: Advanced Lab in Developmental Psychology will be offered, as scheduled, in the Spring 2001 semester (taught by Dr. Schult). However, the P420: Lab in Community Psychology will be delayed one year, from Fall 2001 to Fall 2002. Instead, the P421: Lab in Social Psychology will be offered in Fall 2001 and P435: Lab in Learning and Cognition will be offered in Spring 2002. The most important and pressing issue of these changes is for those who plan to enroll in Social Lab in the Fall 2001 semester. All those who take that lab MUST complete P320 prior to Fall 2001 to be permitted to enroll. There are sections of P320 offered in both Spring 2001 and Summer Session I 2001. More information about these changes may be found in a special newsletter edition that was mailed to majors in late November. That special newsletter is available in as a PDF file as well. To read PDF formatted files, you will need Adobe's Acrobat Reader (available for download free for PCs or Macintosh computers at Adobe's website).

If you have accomplishments or other events you would like to see included here, please forward them to the department or to Dr. McIntosh.
