Presentations:

Dr. Catherine Borshuk made a presentation at the American Psychological Association's annual meeting in August in San Francisco, CA. Her paper presentation was titled "Political Activism for Social Outgroups."

Dr. John McIntosh presented a plenary session paper at the first annual international conference of the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program in August in Westminster, Colorado. The presentation was on "Collaboration Efforts in Evaluation of Yellow Ribbon." In the talk Dr. McIntosh called for cooperative and coordinated evaluation of the efficacy of the Yellow Ribbon program. These important international research efforts will be coordinated through IUSB.

Dr. Tom Mawhinney made a presentation at the Mid-American Association for Behavior Analysis conference in November in Bloomington, IL. The invited presentation was on "A Cultural Analysis of Legalized Gambling in the United States," and was made as part of a symposium on gambling (with 5 total papers in the session) chaired by Dr. Mark Dixon of Southern Illinois University. Eleven universities were represented at the conference, with approximately 70 individuals in attendance at the symposium.

Grants Received

Dr. Catherine Borshuk was recently awarded a grant by the IUSB Research and Development Committee to fund her Faculty Research project titled "Common Humanity and Outgroup Threat as Determinants of Intergroup Advocacy." This grant will support Dr. Borshuk's scholarly efforts during the summer of 2002 to advance her research program.

Dr. Richard Hubbard was recently awarded a grant from the Retirement Research Foundation of Chicago, IL to fund his scholarly efforts during the second semester of his current sabbatical year. This award will permit Dr. Hubbard to conduct research efforts, particularly the work he and Dr. McIntosh have done together in the past with respect to Facts and Myths about Suicide.

Congratulations to these grant recipients!

Construction: Our New "Neighbor"

Located next to Wiekamp Hall, the Student Activities Center has progressed well and while full access to the building looks like it will be delayed until the beginning of the Spring semester, the men's and women's basketball teams have both played games there already. This building and its facilities are a major addition to the IUSB campus and the student experience here. Below is an artist's rendition of the front of the building. Be sure you check out the nearly completed building and take in a basketball game if you get a chance so you can see some of the inside of this new facility.

Advanced Lab Poster Session

The Advanced Lab Poster Session for the Fall 2001 semester was held on the afternoon of Thursday, November 29. A total of 19 students enrolled in Dr. Catherine Borshuk's and Dr. Kevin Ladd's P421: Laboratory in Social Psychology class in Fall 2001 participated and provided information about their reseearch and findings to attendees. Their posters will remain displayed in the hallway outside our lab spaces and office through the end of the semester. Pictures of the session and the posters may be found by clicking here. Psychology majors are required to complete an advanced lab which involves conceiving, designing, and conducting an independent project. The required poster session permits others to learn of their studies and findings. Congratulations to the students and supervising faculty on a set of well-conceived and well-done projects!
