![]() Gwen Lupfer, M.S., Ph.D. (ABD) |
Joining our faculty this year on a one-year visiting position is Gwen Lupfer. Gwen comes to us from Kansas State University where she is a doctoral student, completing all requirements for her degree except her final dissertation (which she hopes to finish this year). She received her BA and MS from Kansas State as well. Gwen's specializations are behavioral neuroscience and animal learning. She conducts research on social behavior among hamsters, with her current research focused on social transmission of food preferences in social and solitary hamsters. As a graduate student at Kansas State, Gwen independently taught several courses, including general psychology, principles of learning, behavior modification, and experimental methods. We are pleased to have her with us this year and are certain our students will benefit from her knowledge and abilities. |

Dr. John McIntosh is the author of a chapter in a major reference book on death and dying published in October. McIntosh, J. L. (2003). Suicide survivors: The aftermath of suicide and suicidal behavior. In Clifton D. Bryant (Editor), Handbook of Death and Dying. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage Publications, Inc. [ISBN 0761925147; 1144 pages] Additionally, McIntosh is the author of two recently published brief journal articles in the journals Psychological Reports and Crisis. Details of the article: McIntosh, J. L., & Lester, D. (2003). The temporal distribution of black suicides. Psychological Reports, volume 93, p. 648. This brief report responded to and refuted a statement in the literature, providing recent data to address the assertion; the statement had been made that black suicides peaked on Wednesdays; we found that instead, they peaked on Mondays just like the nation as a whole when looking at 1998-2000 official data. Lester, D., & McIntosh, J. L. (2003). The variation of the mean age of suicides in the United States. Crisis, volume 24, pp. 173-174. Official suicide data for the years 1968-1999 in the USA were utilized and the mean age of suicides was found to be positively associated with measures of domestic social integration. It was suggested that the mean age of suicides could be a variable worthy of inclusion in suicidological research. |

ADVISING All majors, minors, and associate degree students should be aware that the IUSB Psychology Department requires that all students be advised at least once each year by a faculty advisor. This advising session serves several important functions. Of course, it allows you to get advice about courses for the next and upcoming semesters. It also ensures that your advisor can attempt to monitor your movement toward your degree, both in psychology and with respect to other degree requirements. This will help to identify problem areas or omissions early so that you can address them and graduate without delay. Finally, advising can also provide you with imporant information and input regarding your career planning, résumé writing, and other developmental issues crucial to your life success. As you can see, advising is much more than just course selection. Please be advised regularly. |
