02-11 NSF Cost Share Policy In accordance with Federal requirements, NSF requires that each grantee share in the cost of research projects resulting from unsolicited proposals (proposals that are submitted to NSF, but not as a result of a direct solicitation from the NSF).  According to the NSF Grants Policy Manual, the grantee will meet the statutory requirement by cost sharing a minimum of one percent on the total costs of all NSF-supported projects requiring cost sharing. (Generally, IU has met this requirement by cost sharing the effort of the Project Director).

02-10 Fiscal Officer Policy The rationale for the revised Policy I-1 is to “define the role of Fiscal Officer, Account Manager, and Account Supervisor in order to establish a process to ensure fiscal control, accountability, and integrity for university accounts.”  The new duties and responsibilities of the Account Manager are to “ensure that funds are being spent according to a budgeted plan and that the allocation of expenditures is appropriate to the function identified for the account.”

02-9 Project Director Eligibility The project director generally is a tenured or tenure-track faculty member of the University but may be any individual who is personally and professionally qualified to conduct the project as determined by the dean or director of the submitting unit.  The project director must be an employee of the university during the project period.

NIH Grantsmanship Workshop in December
You are invited to attend a National Institutes of Health Grantsmanship Workshop hosted by Purdue University on Friday, December 6. The workshop targets a broad audience, including faculty (particularly assistant professors), postdocs, and graduate students who have interest in academic careers. It will begin with a talk by Dr. John M. Schwab, a program director in the national Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) at the NIH. The topics he will cover include:

The organization of NIH

What happens to an application after it's been submitted?

Recent funding trends and prospects for the future

Current funding opportunities

Can the culture of academic chemistry accommodate future funding trends?

Following a snack break, Dr. Schwab will chair a panel discussion featuring scientists with extensive experience as NIH grantees and peer reviewers. The panelists represent a broad range of disciplines within the biomedical research community, including biophysics, organic synthesis, and chemical biology. they will share their own experience on such topics as choosing a research problem, crafting a grant application, what reviewers want (or don't want) to see, what happens in a study section meeting, and how to interpret the critiques. There will be an opportunity for members of the audience to present their own questions to the panelists.
There is no charge for this workshop, but pre-registration is requested. If you plan to attend, please email Mary Ryker at mlryker@purdue.edu by November 27. If you have any questions about the workshop, contact Christine King at hcking@purdue.edu. Maps for traveling to campus and parking ar available at http://news.uns.purdue.edu/newsweb.maps.html

IRB CERTIFICATION TESTING: In February 2002 the IUSB IRB decided that after July 1, 2002 no new protocols or continuing reviews would be accepted from investigators that had not passed the IRB Certification Test.  IU has developed an on-line certification program that meets federal standards.  If you plan to be involved in human subjects research at IUSB you should take this certification test as soon as possible at http://www.iupui.edu/~resgrad/Human%20Subjects/HumanSubjectsCourse.html .

Research and Sponsored Programs has been tracking our common questions regarding the Protection of Human Research Subjects?  Concise, direct answers have been posted to a new web page giving specific information regarding:

  • The Test
  • Contact Information
  • Documentation and Proof
  • Collaborators and Subcontractors
