A more comprehensive list of current funding opportunities can be found on the IU Granstlink. You can also search for funding opportunities using keywords from COS.

02-1 Capitalization Threshold Change
The threshold amount for the capitalization of equipment will be raised from $1,000 to $5,000. The federal government has allowed universities to raise their capitalization threshold and a detailed analysis by Indiana University has determined $5,000 to be the optimum threshold for our institution.

  • The capitalization threshold will change to $5,000 effective July 1, 2002 for tagging and creating assets in the Capital Asset Management System.
  • Proposals prepared that request equipment funds for budget periods after June 30, 2002 should include equipment at the $5,000 per item threshold.

Travel Changes

Mileage - The mileage rate will change on January 1, 2002, to 36.5 cents per mile up to the first 500 miles, 18 cents per mile from 501-3000 miles and no claim for mileage over 3000 miles. All in-state travel will be paid at 36.5 cents per mile.

Airline Discounts

US Airways - A new contract has been signed with US Airways effective February 1, 2002 - January 31, 2003, with the discounts starting at 12% on airline tickets over $200. For all travel to Boston, New York, and Washington, DC the discount will be 20% on airline tickets over $200. You must use a designated travel agent to receive the discount and this may be used for business travel as well as personal travel.

United Airlines - While we are in the process to re-negotiate a new contract, the current contract has been extended to March 31, 2002. The discount is 11% for United Airline tickets.

New Area Code Now in Effect
Beginning today, the area code for the IUSB community changes from 219 to 574. Please update your records. For the next six months only, callers will still be able to get through using the old 219 code. However, we encourage you to start using the new 574 code immediately.

NIH is now requiring that all researchers show that they have passed an IRB Certification program in order to submit a proposal to them.  IUPUI is now requiring **ALL** researchers using human subjects to have this certification in place before a protocol will be reviewed. This includes student researchers. It is not far off, that all researchers at IU doing research involving human subjects will have to have this certification. IU has developed an on-line certification program that meet NIH standards.  I encourage everyone involved in human
subjects research to go through this online program at http://www.iupui.edu/~resgrad/Human%20Subjects/HumanSubjectsCourse.html and become certified.

Research and Sponsored Programs has been tracking our common questions regarding the Protection of Human Research Subjects?  Concise, direct answers have been posted to a new web page giving specific information regarding:

  • The Test
  • Contact Information
  • Documentation and Proof
  • Collaborators and Subcontractors
