This is a very short, unrepresentative list of funding opportunities. It only reflects those hard copy RFPs
that have been received by my office in the last month or so. A more comprehensive list of current funding opportunities
can be found on the IU Granstlink.

SUMMER 2002 STUDENT RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS AWARDED
The SMART (Student/Mentor Academic Research
Teams) committee is proud to announce that three students, Mr. Stuart Orr, Mr.
Jacob Ratkiewicz, and Ms. Alicia Zimmerle, will be awarded Research Fellowships
for Summer 2002. Each student will receive a $3000 stipend and will work
closely with his or her faculty mentor to complete a 10-week research project.
This year's awardees come from the fields of biology, computer science, and
anthropology.
Stuart Orr's project is entitled "A comparison of plant species diversity
between restored tallgrass prairies and native prairie remnants." He will be
conducting his research at The Nature Conservancy's Kankakee Sands Prairie
Restoration Site in Newton Co., IN. The overall objective of this work will be
to test the success of the The Nature Conservancy's restoration practices at
recreating the plant species composition and diversity that was originally
present in the once widespread prairie ecosystems of northwestern Indiana. His
faculty mentors are Assistant Professor Deborah Marr and Associate Professor
Andrew Schnabel, Department of Biology.
Jacob Ratkiewicz's project is entitled "Application of Self-Organizing Maps to
Texture Visualization and Analysis." The goals of his project are to use
artificial neural networks to help visualize the multiple statistical
descriptors that are generated during the analysis of textures, which is an
important component of computer vision. His work has many practical
applications, including product inspection and analysis of medical and satellite
images. His mentor is Associate Professor James Wolfer, Department of Computer
Science.
Alicia Zimmerle's project is entitled "A Local Ethnographic Excursion." The
goals of this project are to produce a multi-faceted anthropological and
historical portrait of Elkhart, IN. Ms. Zimmerle's ethnographic excursion into
Elkhart will focus on four major themes: the physical environment, growth and
changes in industry and commerce, cultural and ethnic groups, and personal
stories and unique characteristics. Her faculty mentor is Associate Professor
Rebecca Tortstrick, Department of Sociology.
In addition to summer fellowships, the SMART program awards research expense
grants, travel grants, and internship grants to students on a competitive basis
throughout the academic year. For details on the program, click on

02-3 Retirement and Fringe Benefit Rates This Important Notice announces retirement and fringe benefit rates effective July 1, 2002. Please begin using them immediately on all proposals submitted. Benefits are pooled and all persons are charged based on object codes and not on benefit entitlement. Non-student hourly personnel employed more than 1000 hours annually are covered by the PERF retirement plan. NOTE: These rates are contingent on final approval from the Division of Cost Allocation of the Department of Health and Human Services as a part of the University’s negotiation on Facilities and Administrative Costs.

Federal Business Opportunities Replaces Commerce Business Daily
Federal Business Opportunties has now been designated as the single point of universal electronic public access
on the Internet to Federal government-wide procurement opportunities that exceed $25,000. Beginning January, 2002,
the FBO replaced the Commerce Business Daily (CBD), and effective January 4, 2002, the Department of Commerce ceased
publication of the CBD. http://www.fbodaily.com/
IRB CERTIFICATION TESTING: In February 2002 the IUSB IRB decided that after July 1, 2002 no new protocols or continuing reviews would be accepted from investigators that had not passed the IRB Certification Test. IU has developed an on-line certification program that meets federal standards. If you plan to be involved in human subjects research at IUSB you should take this certification test as soon as possible at http://www.iupui.edu/~resgrad/Human%20Subjects/HumanSubjectsCourse.html .
