  • The 2002 Research Award Lecture entitled "Flipping Through the Pages: The Media's Evolving Portrayals of Women and Minorities," will be presented by Monle Lee, Professor of Marketing on Thursday, November 7, 2002 at 7:00pm in DW1001.
     
  • The next Dean's Seminar for 2002-2003 will be presented by Roy Schreiber, Professor of History on November 15, 2002. His seminar is entitled "Hollywood Red and White and Blue Too." We will meet at noon, or after the Academic Senate meeting in the Board Room.
     
  • IUSB has entered a special agreement with the City of South Bend to solicit proposal from our faculty to help them achieve the goal to assure that South Bend is a competitive and livable 21st century city. Proposals are due to the IUSB Office of Research on November 15th. Guidelines can be found at http://www.iusb.edu/~research/research/citygrant.htm
     
  • The next deadline for the IU Arts & Humanities Initiative is December 2, 2002. Guidelines and a new Cover Sheet are available at http://www.indiana.edu/~kirkwood/ahi/description.htm For this round $100,000 has been added to the $1 million designated for this initiative to fund special needs such as publication subventions, art supplies, or expenses related to musical performance and recording.   • Workshop Opportunities: If you would like to attend a grant-related workshop on the Indianapolis or Bloomington campus, the Office of Research will pay for your travel. Check out what is available at http://www.iupui.edu/~resgrad/spon/workshopcontent.htm If there is enough interest in any specific topic we can arrange to have their presenters come to IUSB.

International Visitors Fund

Lumina Foundation for Education: Our work must be focused to be effective. Therefore, we will concentrate its national funding efforts in three theme areas:
  • Addressing the issue of financial access to postsecondary education.
  • Supporting efforts that help postsecondary students identify appropriate options and remain in school to attain their educational objectives.
  • Understanding and addressing the challenges faced by nontraditional students, including adult students, first-generation college goers and under-served groups of students.

ANDREW W. MELLON POSTDOCTORAL Fellowship
Scholars who have received their Ph.D. degree within the last four years 
in any field of inquiry in the humanities or humanistic social sciences —broadly conceived—are invited to apply for the postdoctoral fellowship, made possible through a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to Wesleyan University. The purpose of this Fellowship is to provide scholars who have lately completed their Ph.D.'s with free time to further their own work in a cross-disciplinary setting, and to associate them with a distinguished faculty.

Indiana Commission on Higher Education
Improving Teacher Quality

Through this program, the Commission will provide grants that support teacher quality as a major factor in improving student achievement.  Eligible applicants for grants must include partnerships consisting of:

  1. A department or school within an Indiana college or university responsible for teacher preparation;
  2. A department or school within an Indiana college or university specific to the subject matter being addressed; and
  3. A "high-need" local educational agency (LEA).

NSF - Math and Science Partnership Program
The Math and Science Partnership (MSP) program supports innovative partnership-driven projects developed to improve K-12 student achievement in mathematics and science. As overall student achievement rises, MSP projects are expected to significantly reduce achievement gaps in the mathematics and science performance of diverse student populations. Successful MSP projects will serve as models that can be widely replicated in educational practice to improve the mathematics and science achievement of all the Nation's students.

1/20/03 IHETS - Course and Module Development Grants
As an initiative of the Indiana Partnership for Statewide Education (IPSE), the Indiana Higher Education Telecommunication System (IHETS) makes grants to Indiana colleges and universities to support development of educational content delivered via technology. The goal of this program is to help faculty expand the range of educational offerings available to citizens of Indiana in an asynchronous, online format.

02-9 Project Director Eligibility The project director generally is a tenured or tenure-track faculty member of the University but may be any individual who is personally and professionally qualified to conduct the project as determined by the dean or director of the submitting unit.  The project director must be an employee of the university during the project period.

New Per Diem Rates Released by GSA
         The General Services Administration (GSA) has announced that new Domestic Maximum Per Diem Rates will become effective October 1, 2002. You can check them here. A link to check the Foreign Rates is also available there. These are the rates used by IU Travel Management.

 

The National Science Foundation has published a revised "Grant Proposal Guide" effective October 1, 2002. The new version of the GPG incorporates the July notice from the NSF concerning the broader impacts review criterion. Other revisions include new guidance on the inclusion on URLs in the project description, revised instructions for completion of the biographical sketch, additional information on Conflicts of Interest, and Fastlane enhancements for proposal file updates and withdrawals. IRB CERTIFICATION TESTING: In February 2002 the IUSB IRB decided that after July 1, 2002 no new protocols or continuing reviews would be accepted from investigators that had not passed the IRB Certification Test.  IU has developed an on-line certification program that meets federal standards.  If you plan to be involved in human subjects research at IUSB you should take this certification test as soon as possible at http://www.iupui.edu/~resgrad/Human%20Subjects/HumanSubjectsCourse.html .
