  • The first Dean's Seminar for 2002-2003 will be presented by Lesley Walker, Assistant Professor of French, on September 20, 2002. Her seminar is entitled "Painting Maternal Love in Eighteenth-Century France." We will meet at noon, or after the Academic Senate meeting in the Board Room. More information on Dr. Walker's seminar can be found here.
     
  • Workshop Opportunities: If you would like to attend a grant-related workshop on the Indianapolis or Bloomington campus, the Office of Research will pay for your travel. Check out what is available at http://www.iupui.edu/~resgrad/spon/workshopcontent.htm If there is enough interest in any specific topic we can arrange to have their presenters come to IUSB.
     
  • The Indiana University Undergraduate Research Conference 2002 will be held on the IUPUI campus on November 8, 2002. The deadline for abstract submission is September 27, 2002. More information and iPDF forms can be found at http://www.iusb.edu/~research/smart/iuurc/iuurc.html. Please encourage your best and brightest students to participate.
     
  • Nominations for the 2003 IUSB Distinguished Research Award are due November 1, 2002. More information can be found on-line at http://www.iusb.edu/~acadaff/awards/research.html
     
  • The 2002 Research Award Lecture will be presented by Monle Lee, Professor of Marketing on Thursday, November 7, 2002 at 7:00pm in DW1001.
     
  • IN THE NEWS: Recently articles in the South Bend Tribune about grants being run by Jerry Hinnefeld and Suzanne Miller. If you see other articles which talk about grant programs here at IUSB please bring them to my attention.
     
  • IRB CERTIFICATION TESTING: No new protocols or continuing reviews will be accepted from investigators that have not passed the IRB Certification Test.  IU has developed an on-line certification program that meets federal standards.  If you plan to be involved in human subjects research at IUSB you should take this certification test as soon as possible at http://www.iupui.edu/~resgrad/Human%20Subjects/HumanSubjectsCourse.html .

International Visitors Fund

9/30/02 Canadian Studies Grant Program
The Canadian government is particularly interested in projects that focus on the diverse aspects of Canada-U.S. relations. Priority topics include bilateral trade & economics, Canada-U.S. border issues, cultural policy and values, environmental, natural resources, and energy issues, and security cooperation (in alphabetical order). In addition, projects that examine Canadian politics, economics, culture, and society as well as Canada's role in international affairs are welcome.

American Philosophical Society - Franklin Research Grant
This is a program of small grants to scholars in order to support the cost of research leading to publication in all areas of knowledge. The Franklin program is particularly designed to help meet the cost of travel to libraries and archives for research purposes, the purchase of microfilm, photocopies or equivalent research materials, the costs associated with fieldwork, or laboratory research expenses.

American Philosophical Society - Sabbatical Fellowship for the Humanities and Social Sciences

Mid-career faculty of universities and 4-year colleges in the United States who have been granted a sabbatical/research year, but for whom financial support from the parent institution is available for only part of the year. Candidates must not have had a financially supported leave at any time subsequent to September 1, 1999. The doctoral degree must have been conferred prior to 1997, and subsequent to 1977.

ACLS Library of Congress Fellowships in International Studies
To support postdoctoral research in all disciplines of the humanities and social sciences using the foreign language collections of the Library of Congress.

ACLS East European Studies Programs
For research and write-up in the social sciences and humanities relating to Albania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and the successor states of the former Yugoslavia.

The purpose of this fund is to facilitate research and creative activity and to assist in efforts to increase external funding on the Northwest, Southeast, East, Fort Wayne, Kokomo, and South Bend campuses.   The maximum grant is $12,000, and intercampus cooperation is not required.

02-9 Project Director Eligibility The project director generally is a tenured or tenure-track faculty member of the University but may be any individual who is personally and professionally qualified to conduct the project as determined by the dean or director of the submitting unit.  The project director must be an employee of the university during the project period.

02-8 Routing and Administration of Construction Grants Due to the unique administrative and programmatic requirements associated with sponsored projects involving construction, the routing of proposals and post-award administration is outlined in this Important Notice

02-7 Legal Name/Authorized Signature on Contract and Grant Documents The official name of the institution on all contracts and grants should be "The Trustees of Indiana University." The official authorized to sign agreements for the university is Mr. Steven A. Martin, Assistant Vice President for Research.

The National Science Foundation has released a revised "Grant Policy Manual" effective August 1, 2002. It is available at  http://www.nsf.gov/cgi-bin/getpub?nsf02151
