NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) RETURNS PROPOSALS FOR NON-COMPLIANCE WITH FORMAT REQUIREMENTS

The National Science Foundation is strictly enforcing proposal guidelines and has returned proposals without review where guidelines as published in the NSF Grant Proposal Guide (NSF 03-2) were not followed exactly.

Some examples:

Project Summary must clearly address in separate statements (within the one-page summary): (1) the intellectual merit of the proposed activity; and (2) the broader impacts resulting from the proposed activity. See the Grant Proposal Guide for complete instructions.

Font size, margins and page length continue to be scrutinized by NSF for nonconformance. Be aware that a 10 point font may still have a type density which exceeds the 15 characters per 2.5 cm. allowed.

Collaborators listed on the Biographical Sketches pages must list the institution of the collaborator. Follow the detailed instructions provided in the Grant Proposal Guide.

Biographical Sketch should include no more than ten publications.

***Please read and follow the NSF Grant Proposal Guide (NSF 03-2) carefully.

The Guide is available in both PDF and HTML versions:

PDF version: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2003/nsf032/gpg032.pdf

HTML version is avaialable at http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2003/nsf032/start.htm

IRB CERTIFICATION TESTING: In February 2002 the IUSB IRB decided that after July 1, 2002 no new protocols or continuing reviews would be accepted from investigators that had not passed the IRB Certification Test.  IU has developed an on-line certification program that meets federal standards.  If you plan to be involved in human subjects research at IUSB you should take this certification test as soon as possible at http://www.iupui.edu/~resgrad/Human%20Subjects/HumanSubjectsCourse.html .

Research and Sponsored Programs has been tracking our common questions regarding the Protection of Human Research Subjects?  Concise, direct answers have been posted to a new web page giving specific information regarding:

  • The Test
  • Contact Information
  • Documentation and Proof
  • Collaborators and Subcontractors

Please visit Human Subjects Protection Education FAQ's
