  • Workshop Opportunities: If you would like to attend a grant-related workshop on the Indianapolis or Bloomington campus, the Office of Research will pay for your travel. Check out what is available at http://www.iupui.edu/~resgrad/spon/workshopcontent.htm If there is enough interest in any specific topic we can arrange to have their presenters come to IUSB. A new series on collaborative research has been put together at http://poynter.indiana.edu/rugs/

Recent Funding Opportunities

This is a very short, unrepresentative list of funding opportunities. It only reflects those hard copy RFPs that have been received by my office in the last month or so. A more comprehensive list of current funding opportunities can be found on the IU Granstlink. You can also search for funding opportunities using keywords from COS.

Lumina Foundation for Education: Our work must be focused to be effective. Therefore, we will concentrate its national funding efforts in three theme areas:
  • Addressing the issue of financial access to postsecondary education.
  • Supporting efforts that help postsecondary students identify appropriate options and remain in school to attain their educational objectives.
  • Understanding and addressing the challenges faced by nontraditional students, including adult students, first-generation college goers and under-served groups of students.

The Math and Science Partnership (MSP) program supports innovative partnership-driven projects developed to improve K-12 student achievement in mathematics and science. As overall student achievement rises, MSP projects are expected to significantly reduce achievement gaps in the mathematics and science performance of diverse student populations. Successful MSP projects will serve as models that can be widely replicated in educational practice to improve the mathematics and science achievement of all the Nation's students.

02-11 NSF Cost Share Policy In accordance with Federal requirements, NSF requires that each grantee share in the cost of research projects resulting from unsolicited proposals (proposals that are submitted to NSF, but not as a result of a direct solicitation from the NSF).  According to the NSF Grants Policy Manual, the grantee will meet the statutory requirement by cost sharing a minimum of one percent on the total costs of all NSF-supported projects requiring cost sharing. (Generally, IU has met this requirement by cost sharing the effort of the Project Director).

02-10 Fiscal Officer Policy The rationale for the revised Policy I-1 is to “define the role of Fiscal Officer, Account Manager, and Account Supervisor in order to establish a process to ensure fiscal control, accountability, and integrity for university accounts.”  The new duties and responsibilities of the Account Manager are to “ensure that funds are being spent according to a budgeted plan and that the allocation of expenditures is appropriate to the function identified for the account.”

02-9 Project Director Eligibility The project director generally is a tenured or tenure-track faculty member of the University but may be any individual who is personally and professionally qualified to conduct the project as determined by the dean or director of the submitting unit.  The project director must be an employee of the university during the project period.

IRB CERTIFICATION TESTING: In February 2002 the IUSB IRB decided that after July 1, 2002 no new protocols or continuing reviews would be accepted from investigators that had not passed the IRB Certification Test.  IU has developed an on-line certification program that meets federal standards.  If you plan to be involved in human subjects research at IUSB you should take this certification test as soon as possible at http://www.iupui.edu/~resgrad/Human%20Subjects/HumanSubjectsCourse.html .

Research and Sponsored Programs has been tracking our common questions regarding the Protection of Human Research Subjects?  Concise, direct answers have been posted to a new web page giving specific information regarding:

  • The Test
  • Contact Information
  • Documentation and Proof
  • Collaborators and Subcontractors
