  • IRB Update - All of the protocols that were suspended last October have been either re-approved or closed and IU South Bend's Institutional Review Board (IRB) is entering a transitional period. For the next three months all applications for IRB approval (exempt, expedited, and full) will be reviewed by the full IUSB IRB in conjunction with the chair of the Bloomington Human Subjects Committee (Peter Finn).

    Normally the full board meets only once a month. However, we are considering adding additional meetings if there is a need. Please allow sufficient time for your IRB application to make it through this process before beginning your research. As always, no research involving human subjects can be started without IRB approval in place. Contact the IRB office (sbirb@iusb.edu) for the current review schedule.

    We have created a new website to allow better access to IUSB's new IRB forms and policies (www.iusb.edu/~sbirb).  Please begin using the IUSB forms today. Although, the policies are still being reviewed, they can serve as a guide as you work your way through the IRB process. Some of the biggest changes are in the following areas:

    1. Students as Subjects (http://www.iusb.edu/~sbirb/studentsassubjects.shtml

    2. Student research (http://www.iusb.edu/~sbirb/studentresearch.shtml)

    If you plan to use students as research subjects or if you supervise students who will be doing research involving human subjects, you should review the above policies carefully.

    We appreciate your patience with this process and we look forward to working closely with all of you that do human subject research at IUSB.

  • IRB Workshop: IU Bloomington will be sponosring an Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) forum entitled "Exploring Risks and Rights in Non-Biomedical Research on October 20, 2004. We would like to send as many faculty as possible to this forum to learn more about social, behavioral, education, and humanities research with human subjects. More information can be found here http://www.indiana.edu/~ovpr/ohrp/index.html. If you would like to attend this forum please let me know as soon as possible.

  • Workshop Opportunities: If you would like to attend a grant-related workshop on the Indianapolis or Bloomington campus, the Office of Research will pay for your travel. Check out what is available at http://www.iupui.edu/~resgrad/spon/workshopcontent.htm If there is enough interest in any specific topic we can arrange to have their presenters come to IUSB.

Recent Funding Opportunities

This is a very short, unrepresentative list of funding opportunities. It only reflects those hard copy RFPs that have been received by my office in the last month or so. A more comprehensive list of current funding opportunities can be found on the IU Granstlink. You can also search for funding opportunities using keywords from COS.

NSF has published a revised version of the NSF Grant Proposal Guide (GPG) (NSF 04-23) that will be effective for proposals submitted on or after September 1, 2004. This document supercedes all prior versions of the GPG and can be accessed at:
http://www.nsf.gov/pubsys/ods/getpub.cfm?gpg

This new version:

  • provides potential proposers with a description of the various categories of funding opportunities utilized by NSF to generate proposals, as well as the appropriate scenarios in which each are used;

  • incorporates new descriptive information on the types of submissions that may be required under NSF program solicitations, as well as the rationale for their use; and

  • implements enhanced capabilities in FastLane for submission of proposal file updates.
