  • IRB Update - There were 113 original files sent to Bloomington.  Of those, 61 have been approved and 43 have been closed.  This leaves 9 studies still under review.  We have assembled a new IRB here at IUSB and that committee will be meeting over the next few months to bring our by-laws, forms, and processes into compliance.  We will keep the campus posted on the IRB activities and will let you know when Human Subjects applications will be reviewed on our campus.

  • Workshop Opportunities: If you would like to attend a grant-related workshop on the Indianapolis or Bloomington campus, the Office of Research will pay for your travel. Check out what is available at http://www.iupui.edu/~resgrad/spon/workshopcontent.htm If there is enough interest in any specific topic we can arrange to have their presenters come to IUSB.

Recent Funding Opportunities

This is a very short, unrepresentative list of funding opportunities. It only reflects those hard copy RFPs that have been received by my office in the last month or so. A more comprehensive list of current funding opportunities can be found on the IU Granstlink. You can also search for funding opportunities using keywords from COS.

List of Common Proposal Mistakes Now Online
With thousands of dollars (or more) involved, sponsors want to know the money they invest will be spent effectively and appropriately. The guidelines state exactly what the sponsors want - or don't want - in proposals. To help researchers, the Office of Research has compiled a list of common proposal mistakes in the Proposal Preparation area of the website. Courtesy of Notre Dame Department of Research.

New Guide to Programs Sponsored by NSF
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has updated its Guide to Programs. The Guide includes broad, general descriptions of programs and activities for each NSF Directorate, as well as sources for more information. It also offers links to other information sources, including NSF Directorate home pages; to related publications such as program announcements and solicitations that contain additional proposal or eligibility information; and to the E-Bulletin for deadline and target date information.

COS Enhances its Funding Opportunities and Funding Alert Services
The Community of Science (COS) has recently made some improvements to its Funding Opportunities and Funding Alert services to make it easier to construct and run funding searches. Specific changes include:

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES - A set of radio buttons now allow you to select whether searches will "Match all", "Match any", or "Exclude All" of the selected terms have replaced the AND/OR/NOT select lists. This will allow users to more reliably set up searches in which they need to use "AND", "OR", and "NOT", especially in the same search.

FUNDING ALERT - Funding Alert has also been updated so that searches can be modified and added using the match all/match any feature. Additionally, the search set-up process has been simplified. The "basic" search interface has been removed; users may now more easily construct a search using a variety of fields.

IRB CERTIFICATION TESTING: In February 2002 the IUSB IRB decided that after July 1, 2002 no new protocols or continuing reviews would be accepted from investigators that had not passed the IRB Certification Test.  IU has developed an on-line certification program that meets federal standards.  If you plan to be involved in human subjects research at IUSB you should take this certification test as soon as possible at http://www.iupui.edu/~resgrad/Human%20Subjects/HumanSubjectsCourse.html .

Research and Sponsored Programs has been tracking our common questions regarding the Protection of Human Research Subjects?  Concise, direct answers have been posted to a new web page giving specific information regarding:

  • The Test
  • Contact Information
  • Documentation and Proof
  • Collaborators and Subcontractors
