Travel Management Services would like to make you aware of a possible scam involving travelers.
GE Corporate Card, IU’s corporate credit card company, has informed us of a possible credit card scam concerning hotels. The scam is targeting trusting travelers who are willing to give out their credit card information over the phone.
Here is how it works:
· The fraudster will call the front desk of the hotel
asking to speak to someone with a common last name such as Johnson.
· The front desk will put the fraudster through to your
room.
· Claiming to be the concierge or someone with the
hotel, they will inform you that there is a problem with your credit card and
will ask you to verify your credit card number and billing address.
**This information can be enough for a scammer to make illegal transactions using your credit card.
An easy way to avoid being
scammed in this manner is to remember to never give out your credit card
information over the phone. It is highly unlikely that the hotel would ever ask
you do so. If this should happen to you, simply tell the caller you will verify
the information in person at the front desk. Once you follow up at the front
desk, you will likely find out that it was a scam. If there is truly a problem
with your credit card, you should always handle it at the front desk, in person.
