Community Development

• South Bend Heritage Foundation (1995 to present): member of the Board of Directors. The Foundation mission is to coordinate human services for inner city residents, to develop suitable housing in the inner city area, and to provide representation in the political process.

    Diversity

• Institutional Transformation Initiative, Indiana University and Purdue University (2000 to present): member of the Leadership Team.  A three year initiative to transform the curriculum, pedagogy, and institution regarding diversity. This will involve faculty, staff, and administration. The leadership team designs the interventions and sets the pace, allowing campus teams to plan specific strategies for their transformation efforts.

• VSA Arts of Indiana (2003 to present): member of the Planning Committee to develop a statewide forum on careers in the arts for people with disabilities. If the search for funding is successful, the Forum will be held in February05. Invitees will be arts administrators and educators as well as present and future artists.

• Fountainhead Tanz Theater, IUSB (1993-1995): a division in the School of the Arts that used arts education to foster multi-cultural expression. The performance-production-teaching unit used literature, art, and dance to provide a voice for the surrounding community.

• Harmony Task Force, Benton Harbor, MI (1991-1994): to address problems of race and race relations. Member of the subcommittee to create and conduct workshops on race relations with community groups and businesses.

• Task Force on Racial Understanding, Neighborhood Information and Sharing Exchange, Benton Harbor, MI (1987-1991): To conduct workshops on race relations with community organizations and businesses

    Desegregation

• United States Federal District Court Appointed Community Education Council (CEC), City of Benton Harbor, Michigan, 8-86 to 8-88. To bring together parents, citizens, and organizations committed to working for the preservation and promotion of quality and stable desegregated public schools in the districts of Coloma, Eau Claire, and Benton Harbor. The objectives of the CEC are to assure: 1) accurate and adequate public information about all aspects of the desegregation process; 2) continuing quality public education; 3) citizen involvement in the process of desegregation; and 4) peaceful and effective implementation of the court order. Member of the subcommittee on community relations.

    Social Movements

• Working Unit on Social Issues and Justice, United Church of Canada, Toronto, Ontario, 10-83 to 5-85. Planned strategy for local role in national program as defined by the Head Council. Consulted with national infant formula action network (INFACT-Canada), through their representative to the Working Unit, to conduct an historical assessment of the movement's goal attainment.

• Master's Thesis Research, Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2-83 to 9-85.

Research involved work with an international network of activist coalitions protesting inappropriate transfer of technology to the Third World. Title: The evolution in Canada of the citizen's movement against Nestle: A descriptive study.

 

• Youth Advocacy Program, Indiana Affiliate (1998 to 2001): member of the Board of Directors. Helping youth to achieve permanency in their lives is a focus of the IYAP services which include licensing and maintaining foster homes, combating commercial sexual exploitation of children, and developing youth service programs.

• Save Our Children Foundation (2004 to present): member of the Board of Directors. The Foundation mission is to raise funds, public awareness, and resources to help in the prevention of and intervention in child abuse, family violence and legal injustice against children. The ultimate goal is to have an annual  national "Save Our Children" Day.

•  Children's Rights Initiative (2004 to present): supervisor for the program evaluation. A collaboration with Arts for Humanity this project involves an invitation to female artists and poets, with an emphasis on black artists as traditionally disadvantaged, to create works focused on the theme of Children’s Rights as defined by the Children’s Charter in South Africa.                                                               www.afh.org.za

• YWCA Week Against Violence, South Bend, IN (1995): planning committee for the South Bend contribution to the national activities. Director and stage manager for the Citywide Multicultural Show presented on the Day to Eliminate Racism and Hate Crimes.
