Study Smarter
Are you spending hours reading but can't remember any of it? Do your notes from class not help a bit when it comes time to study for an exam? Are you always asking yourself, "Now where did I put that?" We can help you study smarter, not harder.
What happens in a Study Smarter session?
You will meet one-on-one with a peer tutor in a friendly, comfortable setting. You will work together to determine your strengths and weaknesses as a learner, determine your learning style and design strategies to meet your individual needs. You are encouraged to bring syllabi, assignments, old exams, textbooks and class notes so the tutor can help you create an efficient study system.
What about the tutors?
Tutors are students who have been trained to become academic coaches. Frequently, they have taken courses you may be struggling with right now. They have experience working with students to find effective strategies for learning course material in the most efficient and effective way. Your tutor will provide the mechanics of the skill and through your consistent practice, you find yourself better equipped for academic success. Your tutor might suggest:
- Developing written goals
- Keeping weekly "To Do" lists with specific tasks
- Using exercises to improve efficiency in memory, listening, reading, writing or vocabulary
- Role playing to develop confidence in talking with instructors
- Scheduled reminders by phone or email
How long does a session last and how many sessions do I need to attend?
Sessions usually last about one hour. You can reschedule as many times as you and your tutor feel is necessary. If you are working on developing a time management plan or a study skills system, you will see better results if you participate in several sessions. The most effective sessions are face-to-face, however, if your work schedule does not allow you to participate during regular hours, we will try to accommodate your needs by email and phone coaching.
How do I make an appointment and where will I meet my tutor?
First, complete the Study Smarter Form. You will then be assigned to a tutor. The tutor will contact you to set up the first meeting. You will meet your tutor in the Learning Center, AI 120.
What is the cost?
There is no cost for Study Smarter tutoring-it's free!
