Checking the Settings
Once Audacity is open and before you begin recording, quickly make sure that it is recording from the correct audio source. To do this, look at Audacity's task bar, similar to the one shown below. There is only one drop down list in this task bar. Check this. The drop down list in the  picture is on the far right side and has Microphone selected. If needed, click on the picture to see a larger version. It is important that Microphone is selected, as it is from the microphone that we wish to record.

—Look at the menu bar and find the drop down list.
—Make sure the list is set to Microphone.
