Scholarships with paper applications for 2009-10
The following scholarships require paper applications, and are not awarded through the general scholarship application process. The priority deadline is April 1 unless otherwise specified:
Articulation Grant for Graduate Students
This grant assists residents of southwestern Michigan who are enrolled in selected graduate programs at IU South Bend by providing a need-based nonresident tuition grant. The student is required to submit a FAFSA each academic year to show need. The student must be pursuing one of the following academic goals: a master’s degree in one of the graduate programs offered by IU South Bend, a graduate certificate program, coursework (undergraduate or graduate) required for admission to or in conjunction with a graduate degree program, or a teacher certification program. Award amounts vary depending on the program and the number of credits in which a student is enrolled. Students receive $130 per credit hour for undergraduate courses, $154 per credit hour for graduate courses in the Master of Social Work program, $160 per credit hour for graduate courses in the School for Business and Economics, and $138 per credit hour for graduate courses in other schools or colleges. Students must have and maintain a 3.0+ GPA. If at any time a student’s semester and/or cumulative grade point average falls below a 3.0, the student is ineligible to receive the award. Awards are reviewed and awarded on a semester by semester basis as funds allow. Students are required to submit the Articulation Grant Application and the FAFSA on an annual basis. Bloss-Halasi Family Scholarship
This supports three full-time undergrad students who are U.S. citizens, and will be known as Bloss Scholars. Students must have a meritorious academic record as demonstrated by a 3.0+ GPA; demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA; The scholarship is renewable for up to four years, as long as they continue to meet the criteria and participate in campus leadership activities. Application deadline is April 1.
Chancellor Merit Award
This award is available to undergraduate students who are not legal residents of the state of Indiana. The scholarship allows nonresidents to pay in-state fees. Beginning freshman, current, and transfer students may apply. Requires full time and continuous enrollment. Applications and information are available at the Office of Admissions. Civil Rights Heritage Center Community Service Award for Undergraduates
This award recognizes IU South Bend students who demonstrate an understanding of the values of personal responsibility and commitment to community service. Incoming freshmen, current undergraduate, and transfer students may apply. Civil Rights Heritage Center Freedom Summer Award
Recipients are IU South Bend undergraduate students who understand the importance of personal commitment in a democratic society and choose to participate in one of the Freedom Summer study tour courses directed by the Civil Rights Heritage Center at IU South Bend. Community Service Award
This award recognizes students who demonstrate leadership and involvement in the community and encourages continued community involvement as a student at IU South Bend. Recipients must agree to actively participate in an IU South Bend approved community program program each semester.
Distinguished Scholarship
Outstanding high school graduates are selected based on a Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) critical reading/math score of 1300, a rank in the top 10 percent of their high school class, activities, service, and recommendations. The scholarship is renewable based on a 3.5 GPA and is valued at $2,000 per year. Application deadline is March 1.
Emergency Assistance Grant
The IU South Bend Assistance Scholarship provides one time only emergency financial support for undergraduate and graduate students who, without the aid of this scholarship, are unable to continue attendance at IU South Bend. There are a LIMITED number of scholarships available, and is awarded for the semester that is applied for only. You may be asked to provide some documentation. Most scholarships are for less than $1,000. Recipients will be offered a Paying for College workshop during the semester. Students must have a 2.0+ GPA and enrolled in at least three credit hours. They must demonstrate financial need by submitting a FAFSA or an alternative needs analysis form.
Friends of the Franklin D. Schurz Library Student Employee Scholarship
This scholarship rewards library employees and scholars. The Friends of the Schurz Library established a student employee scholarship for students who work either in the Franklin D. Schurz Library, the Learning Resource Center (LRC), or Instructional Media Services (IMS). These unrestricted awards are in the amount of $100 to $500. Applications may be picked up in Schurz Library 304 or from any library supervisor. Application deadline is January 15.
Honors Program Scholarship
Consideration for an honors scholarship is given to entering freshmen who score at least 1800 on the SAT (or a 26 on the ACT), who rank in the top 10 percent of their class, and who have at least a 3.5 GPA. Transfer students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 also may be considered. In exceptional cases, the director of the honors program has the discretion to waive any of these requirements. The scholarship is renewable for eight semesters, provided the student successfully completes one honors course per year and maintains a 3.5 cumulative GPA. Recipients must successfully complete the Honors Colloquium in the fall of the year they become a member of the honors program. The amount of the award is dependent on the availability of funds and is pro-rated for less than full-time enrollment. The scholarship, currently, is a tuition- and mandatory-fees specific award of $1,400 per academic year based on full-time enrollment. Hoosier Presidential Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to Indiana students of exceptional achievement. It is valued at $6,000 per year and is renewable for four years. Nominations are made on the basis of information submitted in support of the student's application for admission. Students who apply for admission to IU South Bend before December 1 receive priority in the nomination process.
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 153, Scholarship
This undergraduate scholarship provides support to biological or dependent children of active union members in good standing who contribute to the Electrical Industry Advancement Fund. If insufficient applicants are gathered from this group, consideration is given to biological grandchildren and then to current spouses of active union members. Applicants must be formally admitted to IU South Bend in any undergraduate degree program. The scholarship awards up to 30 percent of the per-credit-hour tuition cost of attendance at IU South Bend. Renewal awards require a 2.0 GPA and recipients are awarded the scholarship for the reasonable amount of time needed to complete their degree program. International Student Fee Remission Scholarship
International Student Fee Remission Scholarships are available to highly qualified, non-immigrant, F-1 and J-1 international undergraduate and graduate students. To qualify for the scholarship, F-1 and J-1 students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate economic need. IU Alumni Association Scholars
Applicants must be full-time IU South Bend undergraduate students who are children of dues-paying members of the IU Alumni Association. A $1,000 scholarship is awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement. Applications can be requested from IU Alumni Scholars, Virgil T. DeVault Alumni Center, 1000 East 17th Street, Bloomington, Indiana 47408-1521. Application deadline is April 6.
IU Alumni Chapter of Elkhart County Scholarship
This scholarship is available to IU South Bend students who reside in Elkhart County.
IU Alumni Chapter of St. Joseph County Scholarship
This $500 award is given to two graduating high school seniors who best exemplify dedication to education and personal achievement. Students must attend an Indiana University campus in the fall. IU South Bend Alumni Association Mary Margaret Student Scholarship
This award is available to current and entering undergraduate students who have been out of high school for at least three years and enroll in at least 6 credit hours each semester. Grade point average and community service are considered. Financial need is considered but is not a determining factor. A personal statement is required. Preference is given to those who provide a written recommendation attesting to their religious affiliation. IU South Bend Alumni Association Nontraditional Student Scholarship
This award is available to current and entering undergraduate students who have been out of high school for at least three years and enroll in at least 6 credit hours each semester. Grade point average and community service are considered. Financial need is considered but is not a determining factor. A personal statement is required. IU South Bend Alumni Honors Scholarship
First-time freshmen who meet the criteria for the IU South Bend Honors Program Scholarship may apply for this $4,000 freshman-year scholarship. Applicants must submit an essay and three letters of recommendation. Students who meet renewal criteria may be awarded the IU South Bend Honors Program Scholarship for subsequent years. IU South Bend Alumni Association Sueño Scholarship
This scholarship is open to both undergraduate and graduate students who are formally admitted to and enrolled in at least 6 credit hours at IU South Bend. Considerations include a minimum 2.0 GPA for undergraduates and a minimum 3.0 GPA for graduate students; financial need, based on the FAFSA or the Alternate Needs Analysis; and a completed application, which includes an activity sheet , a personal statement, and a letter of recommendation. Preference is given to Hispanic and Latino students, but the scholarship is open to qualifying students of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds. IU South Bend Alumni Association Yoder Oil Corporation Scholarship
First-time freshmen who meet the criteria for the IU South Bend Honors Program Scholarship as well as: are a graduate of an area Christian high school (see application for details), following a business curriculum or willing to intern at Yoder Oil; intend to participate in the IU South Bend student organization, Campus Crusade for Christ, or Campus Bible Fellowship; demonstrate a high level of volunteer activity; and are a resident of either St. Joseph or Elkhart Counties may apply for this $4,000 freshman-year scholarship. Applicants must submit an essay and three letters of recommendation. Students who meet renewal criteria may be awarded the IU South Bend Honors Program Scholarship for subsequent years. IU South Bend Black Council Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to current meritorious students. The scholarship supports IU South Bend's efforts to recruit, retain, and graduate students from diverse backgrounds. Preference is given to African American/Black students. Application deadline is March 1.
IU South Bend Elkhart County Scholarship Fund
Established to encourage the pursuit of education by all residents of Elkhart County. Applicants must be residents of Elkhart County for at least one year, be enrolled, pursuing a degree, and in good academic standing at IU South Bend. Application deadline is April 1.
IU South Bend, Ivy Tech College North Central, Scholarship
One outstanding Ivy Tech College North Central graduate is recognized each year. Application deadline is April 1.
IU South Bend Leadership Award
These awards recognize demonstrated leadership activity and encourage current student leadership in a broad range of student life programs at IU South Bend including student government, student activities, and student publications. The value of the award varies depending on the availability of funds and hours of enrollment. Recipients of this award must agree to take an active role in at least one IU South Bend student life program. Application deadline is April 1.
David Starr Jordan Foreign Studies Scholarship
This scholarship is intended to encourage undergraduate and graduate students at IU South Bend to enhance their education by residence and study abroad. Applicants may be majors in any academic field. Application deadline is February 1.
Lester C. Lamon Scholarship
This scholarship is for any undergraduate or graduate student who demonstrates an understanding of the value of personal responsibility and commitment to community service through the Civil Rights Heritage Center. The scholarship is given to participants in the Civil Rights Heritage Center with a satisfactory academic performance as demonstrated by a minimum GPA of 2.8 on a 4-point scale for undergraduate students and a minimum GPA of 3.3 on a 4-point scale for graduate students. H. Theodore and Annette H. Noell Scholarship
This scholarship provides financial help to full-time IU South Bend students who are members in good standing of either the 4-H organization, or the orders of DeMolay, Job's Daughters, or the Rainbow Girls. This award is based on academic merit; recipients must have a minimum 2.8/4.0 cumulative GPA. Financial need is not required. Recipients may apply for renewal if all criteria are met. A maximum of four awards is made each year, the minimum value of each scholarship is $500. Application deadline is April 1.
Out-of-State Transfer Scholarship for Undergraduate Students
This award provides a $100 per-credit-hour tuition scholarship to nonresident students who have earned an associate's degree or have a minimum of 54 transferable credit hours with a 2.5 GPA. This scholarship can continue until a bachelor's degree or 70 IU South Bend credit hours are complete. Applications and information are available at the Office of Admissions. Chad Edward Pearson Memorial Scholarship
Applicants must be undergraduates who have completed 48 credit hours with a GPA of 3.3 or higher. Students must demonstrate a record of service and declare an intent to pursue a career in human services, public service, or education. Awards are $3,000 to $5,000 annually and are given on a merit basis. Application deadline is April 1.
Joseph L. and Julia B. Peyser Foreign Studies Scholarship
This scholarship encourages well-qualified students at IU South Bend to enrich their education by residence and study or research abroad. Study abroad proposals may be made for a period of or one academic year, one semester, or a summer session. A desirable study-abroad focus would be the study of a modern foreign language in the country where that language is spoken on a daily basis. An acceptable study-abroad proposal may include English-language programs in English-speaking or other countries. All majors are welcome to apply. Application deadline is March 1.
Helen F. Pope Memorial Scholarship
This award encourages participation in the IU South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center (CRHC). Preference is given to African American/Black, Hispanic, and female students. Undergraduate students with a minimum 2.5 GPA and graduate students with a 3.0 GPA and financial need may apply. Recipients will take a leadership role in a CRHC program each semester. The application deadlines are April 1 (for fall semester), and October 15 (for spring semester, if offered), each year.
Props Family Scholarship
Applicants must be incoming freshmen, Indiana residents, employed at least six months in an entry level position. Criteria include a minimum 900 SAT score, full-time enrollment, and financial need. Verizon Scholarship
Available to students who complete their freshman year (at least 24 credit hours) in the SmartStart Program at IU South Bend's Elkhart Center. Students must declare a course of study, earn a GPA between 3.0 and 4.0, and enroll in at least two courses on the South Bend campus in the next fall semester.
