.How to Become a Sociology Major. Have you done both?

Two Steps (You must do both):

1. You need to tell our dept. secretary, Kathi Piekarski, that you want to become a sociology major. She is in Weikamp DW 2288, (574) 520-5509, kpiekars@iusb.edu. She will give you forms to fill out and also assign you an advisor.

2. Notify the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Nancy Pillar, Weikamp DW 3300B, (574) 520-4214, npiller@iusb.edu, that you want to be a sociology major. You will need to fill out some forms for them as well. This second step is very important, otherwise the IU computer system doesn't know you are a sociology major.

You Need to Be Advised every Semester

All Sociology Majors must be advised prior to each semester in which they register for classes. This will help you avoid taking classes that you don't need.

The first advising session should be in person. Later advising sesssions can also be in person, but often can be handled by phone or e-mail.

How to Set Up an Advising Session

1. Find out who your advisor is (see link in right navigation bar). If your name doesn't appear in our list you may have skipped either step 1 or step 2 in "How to become a Sociology Major" (above) or you just recently became a major after the list was made. If your name doesn't appear, contact Kathi Piekarski, Weikamp DW 2288, (574) 502-5509, kpiekars@iusb.edu, and let her know so that we can correct our records.

2. Find the e-mail, phone number, and office hours of your advisor. (See the "Facutly Contact Info." link in the right navigation bar.

3. If you want an "in-person" advising session you should make an advance appointment rather than just dropping by during office hours. That gives your advisor time to pull your information together and prepare to advise you well. If you have met with your advisor before, you may be able to handle the advising over the phone or by e-mail.

4. Before your actual advising session (regardless of whether you do it by e-mail, phone, or in person) it is a good idea for you to prepare a list of classes that you think you need to take and a list of questions that you need answered. Get help with figuring out what courses you need from the advising worksheets (click on link in right navigation bar).

Other Information You Need to Know to Graduate

1. Be sure you understand the requirements for the sociology major. Click on "Degrees and Required Coursses" in left navigation bar OR "Advising Worksheets. . . " in right navigation bar.

2. All Sociology majors must also satisfy the B. A. requirements (sometimes called "general educatation" requirements) for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Click the right navigation bar link "Other (Gen. Ed.) Requirements for graduation" to find out what these are. To find specific courses that satify these Gen. Ed. requirements, click the right navigation bar link " Upcoming Courses that Satisfy Gen. Education Reqs."
