Call for Proposals

We are now accepting proposals on this year's theme: "Good Practice in Action."

  • In 1987, Arthur Chickering and Zelda Gamson introduced us to their "Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education." They gathered a task force of experts to work with them to formulate these principles based on fifty years of research. These principles are a collection of findings on how teachers teach and students learn alone and together as well as how teachers and students communicate with each other. For more than two decades how, several iterations and permutations of these principels have been put into action, their applications researched for effectiveness, and their breadth and depth used for faculty tenure, promotion and review.

  • Briefly, good practice does the following:
    1. encourages contact between students and faculty,
    2. develops reciprocity and cooperation among students,
    3. encourages active learning,
    4. gives prompt feedback,
    5. emphasizes time on task,
    6. communicates high expectations, and
    7. respects diverse talents and ways of learning.

We invite submissions that focus either on scholarly research about or the implementation of these seven principles. Proposals may be for a presentation or a poster board. Accepted proposals will be considered for inclusion in the electronic proceedings of the conference. Accepted proposals may be a 20-minute presentation (panel of 2-3 presenters) or an individual 30-minute presentation to be followed by a 20-minute Q&A period.

New This Year: Works-in-progress roundtables. Participants are invited to bring data and SoTL research-in-progress for roundtable discussions with colleagues. Proposals are requried for the 8-10 minute presentations and accepted participants will receive feedback in a facilitated small-group setting.

To submit a proposal, please send the following information for each presentation:

  • Title
  • Short abstract (2-3 sentences for promotional materials
  • Presentation summary (for review committee, 500-1000 words) that discusses how the research related to the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Proposals should also include:

  • Name of each presenter
  • Institution or Affiliation
  • Position/Title
  • Mailing and e-mail addresss
  • Phone number
  • Brief biographical information

All proposals must be submitted to:

The University Center for Excellence in Teaching, Indiana University South Bend ucet@iusb.edu . Electronic submissions only, please.

Note that the number of 50-minute presentations that can be accepted is limited. Please indicate whether you would be interested in presenting a poster session in lieu of a presentation.

We will confirm receipt of your proposal via the "reply" e-mail function and submit your proposal (with names removed) to the review committee. To be considered, the review committee will expect to see clear evidence that the presenters are informed and engaged in the implementation of one or more of the seven principles.

DEADLINE FOR PROPOSALS: Noon (EST) Monday, January 11, 2010
ACCEPTANCE NOTIFICATION: Monday, February 8, 2010.
