Teaching Circles
Teaching Circles are informal discussion groups that meet every few weeks to discuss a topic of common interest. Group members set meeting times and topics. Groups can be formed or disbanded at any time, following the interests of group members. UCET serves as the contact point and provides support for the groups. There are some wonderful books on teaching issues, but few of us have time to read them. Even if we make the time, it can be difficult to find a discussion partner. In past years, our circles have focused on several books--some classics and some classics-to-be. A limited number of free books will be available to the first people who commit to attending each circle. Circles will have a designated leader and will meet 3-5 times as they read the book.
UCET will sponsor workshops in cooperation with the One Book One Campus Selection for 2008-2009 and the Campus Theme: "Revolutions in Thought". The 2008-2009 Campus Theme of "Revolutions in Thought" will celebrate and explore intellectual innovations spanning all disciplines. Our world is changed, for better or worse, when conventional wisdom and established patterns of behavior are challenged. This academic year will be full of important intellectual milestones such as the 150th anniversary of Charles Darwin's revolutionary "The Origin of Species." Furthermore, many aspects of our world are currently undergoing revolutions, and many members of our community are active participants in furthering those changes. The campus theme is an occasion for the IU South Bend community to assess the revolutions of the past, to embrace the new ideas of today, to celebrate the defeat of old ones, and to learn how we can all cause the world to change.
