Admission Requirements

Our students come from diverse backgrounds but share a common commitment to educational success. In making our admissions decision, we look for and consider factors that emphasize academic performance and preparation. Specific requirements are listed below.

First Year Students

For Full Admission, students must have all of the following:

At least a B average

Core 40 or Academic Honors Diploma (or an out of state equivalent)

SAT scores at or above the Indiana State average (1000 or higher on the verbal and math sections or a 21 or higher ACT composite score). Students who are 21 years of age or older are not required to submit SAT or ACT scores unless required for admission to a specific program

Rank in upper half of high school class

GED score of 63 or higher

Counselor recommendation (current high school students only)

Conditional Admission:

Students who do not qualify for full admission may be reviewed for conditional admission.

Students are offered conditional admission on a case-by-case basis. A conditional admission factors include GPA, diploma type, SAT/ACT scores and class rank. To be considered, all students much have a 2.0 GPA or higher on a Core 40/college prep diploma.

Transfer Students

Official high school transcript

Official college or university transcripts from all previously attended institutions

Average or above-average achievement at the previous college (at least a 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale).

Intercampus Transfer Students

Students who have completed course work on another Indiana University campus and have not earned a bachelors degree may apply for a permanent or temporary (guest) transfer. Please visit Intercampus Transfer site for additional information.

Returning Students

Students who have stopped attending IU or have attended another college or university since last enrolling at IU South Bend are defined as returning students. Returning students who have not earned their first bachelors degree should contact the appropriate academic division or the Office of the Registrar at 574-520-4451. Returning students who have attended another university since last enrolling at IU South Bend need to have a transcript sent to the Office of Admissions. Prior course work will be evaluated for transferability and credits will be posted to your Indiana University transcript. Students seeking an additional undergraduate degree should review the information listed below.

Second Undergraduate Degree Students

Official college or university transcripts from all previously attended institutions (do not submit transcripts from Indiana University)

Guest Students

(Guest students are students enrolling for a semester or summer session as visitors from another institution.)

Official college or university transcript indicating good academic standing. Other acceptable documents are a letter of good standing or the most recent grade report from the home institution.

Average or above-average achievement at the home institution (at least a 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale)

Students between their senior year in high school and their freshman year in college must submit a letter of acceptance from their home institution.

Students intending to enroll in computer science, English, mathematics, or a course in the natural sciences must show evidence of required prerequisites or complete IU South Bend's placement examinations.

Non-Degree Students

Applicants who are over 21 years old and have earned a high school diploma or GED can apply as non-degree students and remain as such for up to 12 credit hours of course work. To apply as a non-degree student, please submit the following:

Post-baccalaureate Non-Degree Students

Students who hold a bachelor’s degree may choose to apply for non-degree work at the undergraduate or graduate level.

For Undergraduate Level

For Graduate Level (500-600)

For students who wish to take graduate level courses (500-600) you will need to apply for Graduate Non-Degree status with the department that houses the courses you wish to take. Before applying please contact the department directly to ensure they will approve you for the class. A list of the graduate programs can be found here.

If have you applied to IU South Bend previously or are a returning student, please contact the Admissions Office at 574-520-4839 before you continue.  You may not be required to do a new application or pay the $35 non-refundable application fee.

High School Students

Current high school students who have completed their sophomore year can apply to take university courses. Talk to your high school guidance counselor to find out how university courses fit into your high school schedule and college planning. To consider you for admission as a high school student, we will need:

Programs with Special Admission Requirements

If you are interested in applying to one of the following programs, separate and/or additional information may be required.

Dental Hygiene

Music

Prospective music majors must pass an audition with the School of the Arts. The audition may serve as a scholarship hearing for Music Talent Scholarships. For more information, contact the School of the Arts at (574) 520-4134 or visit www.iusb.edu/arts.

Nursing
