Diplomas
Diplomas are distributed by the Office of the Registrar approximately six to eight weeks after students have been certified for graduation. The Office of the Registrar will notify graduates when their diploma is available for pickup. Please bring a photo ID to pick-up your diploma.
Caps and Gowns
All participants must wear custom IU apparel at Commencement. Graduates rent their gowns (and hood for masters degrees) from Herff Jones and return them in the mailer provided after the ceremony. Associate and master degree candidates keep their caps and tassels. Bachelor degree candidates keep their caps, tassels, and stoles of gratitude.
After Friday, April 14 the only way to get a cap and gown is the day of Commencement at the Joyce Center starting at 8 am. Sizing and availability will be limited. Cash payment only.
Bachelor cap, gown, tassel, stole: $180
Master cap, gown, tassel, hood: $220
Stole: $40
Tassel: $20
Cap: $20
Graduating with Academic Distinction
Graduates with a minimum GPA of 3.9 and who complete at least 60 credit hours at IU South Bend are graduated with highest distinction; those with a minimum GPA of 3.8 and who complete at least 60 credit hours at IU South Bend are graduated with high distinction; and those with a minimum GPA of 3.65 and who complete at least 60 credit hours at IU South Bend are graduated with distinction. These honors are noted on diplomas and students who earn academic distinction are invited to wear university provided fourragéres, looped cords worn from the left shoulder, at Commencement.
Some programs limit the number of students awarded distinction to the top 10 percent of the graduating class. Others may use different criteria for awarding distinction. Baccalaureate degree candidates may check with their school’s recorder about graduating with academic distinction.
Fourragéres will be distributed by your academic unit, not the Alumni Office.
Honor Cords from Greek Honor Societies
Graduates who are members of the nearly 60 nationally recognized honor societies may also wear their societies’ honors cords* or medallions during Commencement. Cords are available for purchase directly from the various society headquarters and become the property of the student.
*note: “cords,” not sashes or stoles
