Speech Night: The final showdown

Come watch as the finalists duke it out in a battle of persuasion, and see who comes out on top! Speech Night Finals will take place at 5:30 pm on Monday, December 3, in the Northside Recital Hall.

A tradition begun in 1982, this event features the semester’s best public speaking students competing for one of six positions in Speech Night Finals.

Orators are chosen by their peers in their introductory Public Speaking course. In this general education class, students learn how to make a variety of formal presentations. During Speech Night, they will present persuasive speeches on a variety of self-chosen topics.

Speech Night preliminaries feature one student from each discussion section of the semester’s Public Speaking courses presenting his or her persuasive speech in a preliminary round. Two students are chosen from each preliminary round to present their speeches at Speech Night finals.

Speech Night Finals will be a special evening featuring the winning speakers from the preliminary rounds, guest speakers, and guest judges from the community.

This year’s guest judges all work in higher education around the region. They are Stephan Payne, vice president for integrated marketing communication at Andrews University; Tamara Taylor, assistant director of student involvement and multicultural services at St. Mary’s College; and Kenneth Baierl, director of communications and marketing at IU South Bend.

Admission to the final rounds is free, but tickets are required. Tickets may be picked up from the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts Box Office. 574.520.4203.
